Managing expats as an expat...I believe that this is an often understated aspect of leadership. A big thanks to Bianka Budai for sharing this article. I also think there is an equally important and related element that can be forgotten...local managers managing expats. In particular, local managers who haven't been expats themselves, or worked in a global capacity. And there are plenty of them, who are great managers who experience challenges in the context of being the manager of an expat. This can be due to the local manager: 1) Not knowing how to lead someone from a different cultural background. The expectations of a leader or subordinate are viewed very differently through different cultural lenses - and let's face it - leading people from our own cultural background can be hard enough without the added cultural layer. (Possible fix: provide some basic intercultural training/coaching. Or get them a mentor who has been down this path before) 2) Not understanding or buying-in to the purpose/bigger reason of the expatriates move. In a project environment the move can be clear cut and easily understood - especially when the technical expertise is not in country. But outside of this, if the talent management reason for the move isn't understood then it can be a hard slog for everyone. (Possible fix: Ensure the local manager is involved early in conversations and decisions relating to the move. Be clear on the role of the manager and their role in supporting the development of the expat) 3) Not understanding the impact of their actions in an expatriate leadership capacity. This is kind of related to the above point, but there are the administrative aspects that, if not taken care of, can impact the life of an expat. There is massive change in the life of an expat and their family that is just not understood by someone who hasn't experienced this themselves. Sure - there is the culture shock. But this can be exacerbated when the basic hygiene and safety factors are not addressed or considered (eg; trailing spouse struggling to find their identity/re-establish themselves, trying to get kids settled in school, or get them to a doctor when you don't know how to do that in your new surrounds - all of this impacts the expat - and their performance at work!). The decisions a local manager makes in these situations, like cutting their expat some slack to have extra time away from work in the early days to learn the ropes of their new environment, can make all the difference. (Possible fix: Provide training or coaching on the impact of culture shock and the role of the local manager in providing psychological safety in this context. Establish a close relationship between the local manager and the global mobility partner supporting this expat; this is a team effort and the local manager shouldn't feel as alone in this as the expat probably does.) This really is a team effort - for everyone's benefit. #globalmobility #expatriation
