States are continuing to think about how to make health care more affordable for consumers while ensuring access to quality care. One step is to better understand what’s happening with health systems and hospitals in their states. Interested in hearing more? Here is a summary of our Hospital Cost Tool by Maureen Hensley-Quinn!
How much do you know about our Hospital Cost Tool? NASHP's Maureen Hensley-Quinn shares 5 things you should know about this tool: 1️⃣ As health care expenditures rise, the largest portion of spending is consistently on hospital care. States want evidence to drive their policymaking and are using this tool to better understand and address hospital costs. 2️⃣ The tool provides insight into how much hospitals spend on patient care services for over 5,000 hospitals. 3️⃣ The Hospital Cost Tool uses annual Medicare Cost Reports completed by hospitals and submitted to the federal government. 4️⃣ You can use the tool to access data on operating profit margins, cost-to-charge ratios, labor expenses, breakeven points, and more. 5️⃣ The tool also shows how costs relate to both hospital charges and actual prices paid by health plans.
