Men pick a team when they’re 7 years old and swear an oath to stick with them for life—no matter how many seasons they fail to perform. It’s not about the immediate glory; it’s about 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲. We stay loyal through thick and thin because, like personal growth, the real transformation happens over time. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 is what turns a losing streak into a winning season, and every great player (or fan) knows that. So, just like the best teams, we keep showing up, learning, and adapting, knowing that growth is a marathon, not a sprint. Now, I’ve been supporting Manchester United since forever. If loyalty was all it took to win, I’d have a trophy cabinet by now. But hey, training and development are key, right? A great clip from an interview with Gary Neville and Trent Alexander Arnold talking about his work with “The After Academy”. It highlights the importance of Player Care and illustrates why it’s so important we strive to make it the best quality service we can, in football and throughout sports. The one thing I would pick out from this however, is no matter the level attained within sport, I believe the grounding that being involved in a professional organisation gives you, can be so value for your next steps after sport in terms of the skills you learn along the way. Any employer, in any industry would highly value: - Discipline and Work Ethic - Goal Orientation - Resilience and Adaptabilty - Team Work and Collaboration - Time Managament - Ability to handle and manage stress - Growth Mindset Part of the work, I see as so valuable, when working with athletes, is drawing on their passions and beliefs and aligning them with the skills they have from sport and life, that will allow them to flourish and drive towards their potential as human beings. What is evident from the video is how supported Trent feels from Liverpool Football Club. It’s so refreshing to see a professional at the top of his game talking with so much enthusiasm and confidence about his career and genuine love for the “work” he does. A lesson that just gets stronger as I get older How good is it being part of a great team... Yesterday there were 3 instances where I was coaching and watching rugby & afterwards it made me think, 'got to focus on team' Even with our young family, we say regularly, ‘team work makes the dreamwork’  And it’s something I want to really focus on more working for myself. Building a team out, of great humans. There’s nothing quite like a group of mates, having fun, with a common goal. With our U8’s rugby team we coach Kenilworth Rugby Club , It’s about the fun, am I allowed to say ‘winning’ as learning winning and losing is a key life skill, and the big one is ,we are focusing massively on them being ‘as one’ and a team mentality. Then I got to watch a cheeky bit of Northampton saints on tv playing some brilliant rugby – the forwards have to do the hard yards for the quality backs to open up – the team celebration post match, on socials is always great to see. Tom Cruse's singing is always great to watch :) Daniel Williams happy man hey ! Later in the day, I headed up to Warwick Uni to see U16 Academy festival. Watching the boys there, team focused, with varying sizes of players, some brilliant skillsets. Will Mason top work on bringing that in. Business is like any team game. It’s not about the individual, it’s a collection of various skillsets coming together to achieve a common goal. Over the years, any success I’ve seen or been involved with, had has been because there’s been great people in the team, great at what they do with a team focus. Who else is a team player and gets the analogy of sport and business ? PS – later in the week the lesson on the ‘rotten egg’, how a business can be drained of energy, staff leave and culture breaks….. Skills are important. But mindset? That’s the game-changer. Manchester City is the biggest example of that. We are talking about treble winners, serial champions, the team with four consecutive Premier League titles, the greatest manager in football history, and a squad full of world-class talent. Yet, 1 loss turned into 2, 2 into 3, and before anyone could blink - 8 losses in 11 games. What happened? Did they suddenly forget how to play football? Did these elite players turn into amateurs overnight? No. The answer lies in mindset. A mental block and a drop in confidence can change everything. Under Pep Guardiola, City had forgotten what back-to-back defeats felt like. Now? They are struggling to get back-to-back wins. This slump shows us something crucial: Talent and skills alone aren’t enough. The right mindset, belief, and mental strength are what turn skills into success. So yes, build your skills. But first, develop confidence, resilience, and mental strength. P.S. - I don't know how I am going to recover from this Derby loss. #manchestercity #premierleague #skills #mindset

🎖️What’s more important…graft or talent? This photo was taken just before I played Exeter City, a team that Olly Watkins (who is currently in Germany in England’s Euros squad) played for, in front of 4000 people. Technically, I was not a good footballer. 🦶 No left foot to speak of. 💥 Hideous touch. 👃 Got a nose bleed whenever I went in the opposition’s box. In spite of all that - I played for my University Football first XI team, even captained them once. I was surrounded by incredible talent. Scholars, people who went on to be semi-pro footballers…in terms of ability we were literally leagues apart. To even have a chance of playing in that team, I knew I would have to be able to run, and run…and run for 90 minutes. I worked very hard, and would frequently vomit during/after the Strength and Conditioning sessions we had at 6:30am on Fridays. Meanwhile, the most technically gifted player I’ve ever shared a pitch with (maybe even including Olly Watkins) outright refused to train that early…and got dropped from the team. This aggravated me more than I can explain. I would’ve given anything for a fraction of his natural ability, he could’ve been a professional footballer. Here I am throwing up against a tree to edge into the team and he couldn’t even be arsed to get out of bed. I'm technically the worst player in the squad, and he can waltz passed players like they're not there. But I’m in that photo. And he’s not. You are unlikely to ever be the most talented person. But talent is nothing if not supported by mindset. Everything you want to achieve is within your power, if you are willing to put in the hard yards and show up for yourself every day. …But try and do it without throwing up on a rowing machine 🤮 What have you achieved through grinding out the hours and relying on grit and determination? #talentvshardwork  #exetercity #hardworkpaysoff #tabata

Another fantastic weekend of Rugby League from the boys in Blue & Red 🏉 🔥Setup, Position & Direction🔥 Great to see our Under 12’s team come away with another win 😊 What’s even better to see is the team understanding & executing an instruction. (Albeit, the final pass came a little late for my liking 😂) Our No.11 very nearly got sucked in to the middle of the park and drifting out of position! He heard the call, adjusted and his goal was in sight! All he had to do was follow the process to reap the rewards! It can be hard to block out the noise which can temporally make us lose focus! But with Direction & Support we can achieve great things and allow ourselves to focus on our own roles to maximise results! Which in turn, will enable the team to succeed! I absolutely love watching these young men face challenges & adversity week in week out allowing their skills, ability & character to develop!!! So much of this can be transferable in to our professional careers! 💥Are we positioned correctly? 💥Have a plan in place? 💥Focused on our role? 💥Understand our objective? Thankfully @ Tobermore we have great leaders in place and the network of support is second to none! My journey in football has taken me from the pitches of some top clubs to the international stage—and now, to mentoring the next generation of players. 🌟 My Football Journey: I started my football career with a passion that led me to train with some of the best clubs in the country. I've had the privilege of playing for West Bromwich Albion, Birmingham City, Aston Villa, and Coventry United. My proudest moment came when I represented my country internationally at the Under-16 level, where I got a taste of the global game. 💪 Overcoming Challenges: But my journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Navigating the competitive world of football taught me resilience, the importance of mental strength, and the value of having the right support system. Injuries, selection pressures, and the ups and downs of the sport were tough, but they also fueled my desire to help others succeed. 🎓 My Qualifications: To better equip myself for this role, I’ve gained a degree in Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences, am just finishing off a masters in Sport and Exercise Psychology and have other relevant qualifications such as Level 3 Personal Training, Mental Health First Aid and FA Level 1 Coaching. Last summer I read an article about the incoming New Zealand rugby coach, Scott Robertson. Having so many important takeaways from Legacy by James Kerr (if you haven't read it, put it on your 'must read' list), I was interested to understand more about the man entrusted with one of the most successful rugby teams in the history of the sport. What I learned was easily translated into my own workplace. For coach, read school leader; for players read students, teachers, parents. The biggest takeaways for me? “Could we do that better?” This is a question I pose to myself and our team every day. The other is "I need people to help me tell the story." We can't tell our story in isolation. It's a collaborative effort where everyone brings something to the table that is valued and utilised to develop the story. Here are some of the pieces that resonated most powerfully with me: You need to know who you are, what your strengths are, and what areas you need support in. As a coach, I’m a great ideas man, but I need people that are finishers, I need experts in different areas. I need people to help me tell the story. My philosophy is to create an environment of care. I care about how players are going to get better, and I care about their well-being. If I provide enough care for them, they’ll care about themselves, they’ll care about their performance. That approach makes you accountable, but there’s a lot of love in it too. We don’t use the word ‘challenge’ – we just ask, “Could we do that better?”
