Morning Hydration Part 2: Adding Lemon Lemon water is a popular morning drink for its refreshing taste and health claims, ranging from detoxification to boosting the immune system. But what does the science say? Benefits: Vitamin C Boost: Lemons are rich in vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that supports immune function and helps combat oxidative stress. A single lemon contains about 33% of your daily requirement. (Not that it is difficult to find sources of Vitamin C) Aids Digestion: The acidity in lemon juice can stimulate digestive enzymes and bile production, which could possibly enhance digestion, especially after overnight sleep. Hydration with Flavor: For people who struggle to drink enough water, adding lemon can make the water more palatable. Costs: Dental Health Concerns: The citric acid in lemon juice can erode tooth enamel over time. Not that anyone is going to actually do this, but theoretically it's optimal to drink lemon water through a straw and rinse your mouth afterward. Minimal Impact on Detox: While lemon water is often touted as a detoxifier, your liver and kidneys handle detoxification very effectively, and lemon water alone won’t significantly enhance this process beyond what normal hydration does.
