Beautifully said. Honoring those who have served and continue to make a difference is so important. Thank you for shining a light on their sacrifices and contributions. 🙏 #VeteransDay #RemembranceDay
With the war on terror more or less completed (with exception to the advisory forces in Iraq and parts of Syria), service members with serious injury will be front and center in debates about long term quality of life and healthcare treatment. For my first Medium post, I discuss a research study I ran a couple years about how we measure quality of life in post 9/11 combat veterans with combat injuries that impact mobility (i.e. lower extremity injuries like amputation and musculoskeletal injury). I also discuss how this information can be better used by policymakers and leaders to create new programs and interventions that better serve this cohort, and those like them. #writing#military#veteran#disability#amputation#injury#leg#spine#research
Today's an important day to honor our veterans!
More specifically, the K9 ones! March 13th is #k9 Veterans Day 🐶 🐾
Here's some interesting information from the American Kennel Club website on the history of dogs in the US Military:
"The states had an unofficial canine war force in World War I, but military dogs did not become officially recognized until March 13, 1942, when a private organization, Dogs for Defense was established to recruit the public’s dogs for the U.S. military’s War Dog Program, known as the K-9 Corps."
"Dogs’ sense of smell is roughly 50 times better than ours, meaning they can sniff out IEDs before they detonate and injure or kill U.S. servicemen in the prolonged Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts. Ground patrols are able to uncover only 50 percent of these, but with dogs, the detection rate increases to 80 percent, claims the Defense Department."

The Main Thing...
What is the Main Thing?
You will have many Main Things in your life. Transitioning from the Military or the Police will be one of those Main Things... but what is the Main Thing within the Main Thing?
the answer is this:
To have and experience a safe and successful transition from service to the civilian sector.
Focus on the Main Thing.
That is the Main Thing... OUT!

VA disability benefits are crucial for veterans as they offer financial support and access to healthcare for injuries or conditions related to military service. These benefits help ease the transition back to civilian life, ensuring veterans receive the care and support they've earned.

Transition stress and boundaries.
The difference between how the armed forces/first responders operate and the civilian workplace.
In the armed forces and first responders community you have a duty to yourself and others around you much more so than civilian counterparts.
When leaving there is an adjustment period where it can be difficult to understand where the civilian colleague is coming from as they can say "I have finished, I am off home" this concept can be alien to the uniformed service leaver they can see it as being "Jack" and not completing the task.
