❗ Great news! ❗ At the Digital Ocean Forum 2024 event, which took place in Brussels, Belgium on June 13, 2024, Hereon gave presentations and interactive demos for the European Digital Twin of the Ocean (DTO). Joanna Staneva (Department Head, KSD) and Kelli Johnson (Scientific Project Manager, KSD) presented about Nature Based Solutions and the sustainable blue economy. The event was organized by the European Commission with support from Mercator Ocean International and the VLIZ - Flanders Marine Institute under the auspices of the Belgian presidency of the Council of the EU. It began on June 12 with a technical scientific workshop, and continued with the unveiling of the DTO prototype and feedback discussions and engagement on June 13. The goal of this event was co-design and co-development of the DTO among experts, stakeholders, policymakers, and interested citizens towards a more sustainable future ocean. President von der Leyen’s 2022 announcement at the One Ocean Summit laid the groundwork for this initiative, underlining the EU’s commitment to the Mission Restore our Ocean and Waters. This forum showcased how the EU DTO aligns with the Green Deal and the UN Decade of Science for Sustainable Development, and demonstrated its potential to drive blue economies, support ocean conservation, and provide actionable knowledge for informed decision-making. ➡ Check out the event website for information on the agenda, speakers, and video presentations: https://lnkd.in/ewbjj3Ry #hereon #coastalscience #küstenforschung #digitaltwin #digitalerzwilling

Agriculture should play an important role for #carbonstorage #climatechange
Did you know that soil contains almost twice as much carbon as the atmosphere? 🌱 Among them, agricultural soils offer great potential for carbon sequestration in the form of soil organic carbon, as they have been depleted of organic matter. 3 benefits: ▪ Carbon can remain stored in deep soil for thousands of years ▪ It contributes to climate resilience factors identified by IPCC : soil quality, agricultural productivity, biodiversity and water protection ▪ It is one of the least costly negative emission option to fight climate change The Horizon Europe ORCaSa project team coordinated by INRAE, was at the #IUSS International Union of Soil sciences’ centennial celebration and congress in Florence this week to present the Soil Carbon International Research Consortium! The Soil Carbon IRC gathers research organisations, public agencies and the private sector. Developing 3 types of services: research prioritisation and alignment, knowledge sharing and capacity building, and soil carbon monitoring methods. The IRC is preparing the launch of the #Impact4soil, the new knowledge platform designed for soil carbon research stakeholders ⤵ Jean-François Soussana Suzanne REYNDERS Eric Ceschia

Over 100 researchers, industry leaders and policy partners from across Ireland, Northern Ireland and Great Britain are gathering for the first time to celebrate the Co-Centre for Climate + Biodiversity + Water today, where they will draw up project plans for integrated solutions to the most pressing common challenges of climate change, biodiversity decline and water degradation. The €41.3 million Co-Centre is initially funded for six years by the Government of Ireland (Science Foundation Ireland and Shared Island Fund); the Northern Ireland Department of Agriculture, Environment & Rural Affairs; and UK Research and Innovation. In addition, the project will also receive more than 30% co-funding from over 30 industry partners. The Co-Centre is a collaboration between Trinity College Dublin, Queen's University Belfast and University of Reading, UK. The Co-Centre is one of the first international research centres to bring researchers across Ireland, Northern Ireland and Great Britain together at such scale. It is placed to address challenges around maintaining a stable and liveable climate, securing and restoring biodiversity and the ecosystem services provided by nature, adapting to climate change, and reversing water degradation, which require collaborative cross-border approaches. Today we start the CASRI kickoff meeting. In this exciting 2-year EU funded project we will setup a Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda with different European Environmental Protection Agencies. We focus on the themes 1️⃣ Resilient net-zero circular production systems 2️⃣ Biodiversity and Climate 3️⃣ Sustainable Urbanisation 4️⃣ Energy Transition. Deltares leads the Work Package where for each of the 13 CASRI countries and 2 'mirroring countries', National Key Stakeholders are being asked for their input: ❔ What do they see as main R&I gaps on these themes; 🔁 What barriers and examples do they face regarding science to end up in policy and practice, and if the right research is done to answer the questions of practice and policy; 💶 What promising examples do they see for funding transboundary research collaboration. With this CASRI will contribute to systemic, transversal, and above all: actionable research and (better) collaboration between European EPAs and research and funding organizations and the end users of research.... Umweltbundesamt Dessau, Stephan Bartke, Bart Rijken, Gerald Jan Ellen, Kaisa Korhonen-Kurki, Katja Firus, Marie-Christine Dictor, and all National Contacts: Helmut Gaugitsch, Kathleen Van Heuverswyn, Ina Aneva, Eeva Karjalainen, Dominique Mathieu-Huber, Stephan Bartke, Darragh O'Neill, Raffaella Alessi, Sanja Virajic, Mariësse van Sluisveld, Boris Liptak, Gabriela Wuelser, Pierre Queloz, Christopher Collins, ronan uhel, Ander Elgorriaga Kunze, Apostolos Karagiannakos
