CELEBRATE SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY 💙 Small Business Saturday was originally an American shopping holiday but soon spread across the Atlantic and is now celebrated annually on the first Saturday of December in the UK. The idea is to get people to give big business a miss for a day and support the friendly shops, garages, cafes, restaurants, garden centres, travel agents and bars in their neighbourhood. The hope is that we will all discover just how enjoyable it can be to help out local small businesses - and return time after time in the future. The pounds you spend with small businesses in our area will also make a difference beyond retailers' doors. Small businesses create local jobs and pay local taxes, which keeps money circulating within communities. Shopping small in the run-up to Christmas can also be environmentally friendly by reducing the distance that goods travel. Small can be beautiful too and the chances are you will make many surprising discoveries when you walk through the doorway of a unique, independent business. As a small business ourselves, we are happy to support other small businesses and encourage people to shop local this December 7th! #SmallBusinessSaturday #Sheffield #Dronfield #Chesterfield #Wingerworth #Bolsover #Derbyshire

Hoping this marks the first sign that the Government recognises creeping employer costs and burdens that have been heaped upon employers at little or no cost to the government. Whilst we continue to strive to make our jobs more attractive , recent increases in Employer PRSI (and increasing every year for 3 years), Sick Leave Allowances (again a wedge approach with increases over 3 years) and an extra Public Holiday all add 'Straws to the Camel's Back'. These initiatives must be paid for from dwindling SME margins, which makes it harder to do business successfully. Let's never forget we are an open economy that must compete globally if we are to sustain strong employment and attractive jobs.
I have listened to small businesses across Ireland. They have had a lot come at them recently. Now is the the time to inject a bit of common sense into supporting them; the small cafes, the shop owners, the restaurants, the shops we see on the main streets and off the main streets. Small businesses are the backbone of the Irish economy. Determined to work with them and value them.

“The car’s been stolen.” Picture this, if you will. I am standing on a street corner in a city I hardly know, in floods of tears, looking at the space where I left my car, whilst on the phone to husband #1. “The car’s been stolen,” I sob, “and I don’t know what to do.” We’d been in Portugal for little over a year and Red Box was about 6 months old when I went to my first BNI breakfast meeting. I hardly spoke a word of Portuguese, but there I was in a crowd of people, managing lots of unknowns, giving it a go. Two hours later, I am standing on the street, sem carro. Suffice it to say that the car had been towed, not stolen, as I had parked in a tow zone. To be fair, it was very dark, in an area of a city I really didn’t know and at 6.30am, I was probably still half asleep. Several hysterical conversations and €250 euros later, I retrieve the car from the police impound. Starting a business and moving overseas are very similar. It’s a steeplechase, rather than a 100m sprint. There are lots of obstacles in your way, and it’s how you approach and manage them, surpass and then thrive that matters. Stamina, resilience, self-deprecation and a thick skin are good tools to have in your box, whether that’s as an immigrant or a business owner. 20 years after we moved and 18 years after Red Box was officially formed, I still live in Portugal and Red Box is a boutique, bijou business, taking care of frazzled business owners and CEOs. When you’re looking for an experienced executive administrator for your team, do consider me. As well as running my own business, I also have 15 years experience of working in office management, team administration and family offices. My retainer rate is £875 until 1 February 2025. Then it goes up to £900/month. Lock in your support now by signing up for a ‘no onward commitment’ 3-month contract for £2525. Offer ends 20 December 2024. After months of searching, thousands of votes, and with the help of award-winning comedian Darren Walsh Puns – Surelock Homes has locked in the top spot. Read more here: https://bit.ly/4bVrzCZ The Hastings-based locksmith company has won £2,500 and received our coveted Britain's Best Small Business Name trophy for 2024. They bolted to the top of our shortlist with over a fifth of the vote and owner, Matt Triboulliard, shared how it feels to have won, plus why he thinks a great business name is key: “I'm sooooo proud we got the win from such an awesome list of business names! Almost on a daily basis a member of the public will make a comment or take a picture of the vehicle and it's brought in untold amounts of work..." “...I was out with my partner and we passed a hotel that was hosting a Sherlock Holmes-themed night and they'd misspelt it as ‘Homes’. My partner jokingly said ‘Sherlock Homes’ and I thought she said ‘Surelock Homes’...and the name was born.”
