Thoughts From The Trails: Cancelled and delayed flights threatened down time with my bride. We were headed to Denver CO to to a week of traveling around the Black Hills, Badlands and then CrowdStrike hit - no worries we were still 5 days away - BUT we were flying Delta Air Lines so the following Tuesday when we were supposed to fly we got the first of two cancellations and were then bumped to American Airlines who also cancelled our flight. Then get to Denver and Enterprise had nicely cancelled our car reservations... Nothing was going to stop this trip from happening - Spoiler Alert: we made it even if it was a day or two late and $250 poorer... On this trip I wanted to talk about the essentials of purpose - what it means, how you discover it, you know the usual... it is our first Trail Marker at The Forged Leader. Just like the signboard or details at the beginning of the trail - purpose is the first trail marker, and essential before you can unpack strategy, people, communication and repeatable processes (Trail Markers 2-5). So join me on this five part video journey to help you unpack your purpose - who you are supposed to be serving. If you want to go deeper or join a community that will help you on this journey and help you grow a great business then check out https://lnkd.in/eAa-9ZFF https://lnkd.in/ebivRjEm

🚲 🚶♀️ 🚌 🚗 Today I learned a new term: "Motonormativity," coined by Professor Ian Walker. It refers to how our society is car-cultured and more forgiving of cars and car-related behavior. This video from GCN explains it beautifully: https://lnkd.in/dhB2sakV Why are we so forgiving to cars? Everything around us tells us that "car is king," from ads to media reports about car accidents, and especially the built environment where cars come first. This includes lanes dedicated to cars rather than cyclists or pedestrians, automatic right of way for cars at intersections, wide intersections to maintain car speed, and countless other examples. What can we do? A few quotes from the video can help us understand: "We have to build it before the behavior changes." "Once you start to look, it is everywhere... and you can't unsee it." "People do what's easy, and over 70 years we made it so the easiest, most convenient way to get around is to jump in a car." "Every time anybody has introduced a change in the rules of the road, there has been controversy." "It is not about evidence and facts; it's about how people feel." I think we need to encourage more people (including policymakers) to start looking around, be bold in the changes we propose, and remember that people don't like change (even with drunk driving laws), but eventually, if we do it right, people will embrace the change. "If you build it, they will come" - it's from another movie, but it still applies! #Motonormativity #UrbanPlanning #ActiveTransport

https://lnkd.in/d9JKZ6Tm Great video about domination of car culture in our societies... about how streets are designed in a way that pedestrians and cyclists are constantly getting messages that drivers are superior...about how with changes in traffic policies we are challenging culture- as the battle is not based on facts and evidence, but on emotions and culture... and last but not least: how in this car culture we can hardly talk about #accessibility for all. #carspiracy #mobility #sustainability

First principles #thinking (https://lnkd.in/gzMmyDuY) applied to road safety by #Sweden in the 1990s, has made it a country with the lowest #road accident #fatalities today. Focusing safety of the entire road system and not just on cars and vehicles made this possible. Such thinking most often starts with individuals, like Claes Tingvall. Many interesting insights, read ahead. #roadsafety #roadaccidents #safety #life #cars #firstprinciples

Dean Kamen is a BADASS in my book for bringing the first self-balancing local vehicle to market, the first ever consumer vehicle using fly-by-wire steering. Most would not have had the intelligence nor the courage to do this! 20 years ago (this Tuesday) Dean came to my GOING Conference in Boulder, and gave the best speech I'm confident he has ever given on Segway + Small Mobility. Segway was already having challenges, and you can hear it in his tone, but I LOVE THIS TALK of his. I get we are all hustling for what's around the corner, and why listen to a 20 year old talk, and most think the Segway failed. Well, since most in EV development continue to create cars that drive about 75% EMPTY - we still have a lot of progress to make, and there is a lot to learn from this vintage Dean Kamen talk imo. https://lnkd.in/gs6ShFgc Doug Field Robb Bush Doug Frasher Geoff Wardle Drew Takahashi Susan Shaheen Dan Sperling John Norquist Susan S.
