Understanding AI vs. AGI: What’s the Difference? Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) are terms often used in discussions about the future of technology, but they refer to very different concepts. AI (Artificial Intelligence): AI refers to systems designed to perform specific tasks, such as voice recognition or data analysis, based on pre-defined algorithms. These systems excel at narrow functions but lack the ability to understand or learn beyond their programmed scope. AGI (Artificial General Intelligence): AGI, often called “strong AI,” represents a more advanced form of intelligence with the capability to understand, learn, and apply knowledge across a wide range of tasks—much like human cognitive abilities. AGI would possess general problem-solving skills and adaptability. While current AI systems are highly specialized and effective, AGI remains a theoretical concept that aims to achieve human-like cognitive flexibility.
