My first ever solo sales call was at the tender age of 23, some 36 years ago. Two years later I made my first international trip to talk to a distributor in Barcelona about my brand at the time (the wonderful Mount Gay rum). Thirty-four years later, and I have visited over 100 countries across the globe mainly selling scotch whisky. To this day I still get excited before a long-haul trip, especially if a new market is on the itinerary! My most recent trip to Latin America with QSI’s Commercial Director, Sergio Tomás Labori was no different. Over the 8-day trip, Sergio and I visited Mexico, Guatemala (a new market) and Panama. The spirits market in 2024 has been very challenging, and 2025 looks likely to be more of the same. However, this trip reminded me that even in the more challenging times, there is reason to remain optimistic. There are still plenty of new business opportunities, but you must have an open and inquisitive mind to go looking for them. We spent the first couple of days trying to better understand a new piece of business for QSI: the all-inclusive hotel scene in Cancun. The numbers are mind-blowing, and the scale of some of these operations is incredibly vast. The dominant tourist visitors are from the USA, and we found interesting opportunities to market one of our single malts to this captive audience. The objective in Guatemala was to excite the sales team of our relatively new distributor, and to get them motivated and trained to talk about our brands to the Guatemalan trade. It was also a great opportunity to build a stronger connection with the management team. Unfortunately, this time we didn’t get outside of Guatemala City but from what I have heard it is a country I would like to revisit one day as a tourist! These market visits are a great opportunity to see what is happening in the category with competitors (packaging, pricing, promotions etc). They are also essential for building relationships with existing and potential new customers. As 2024 draws to a close and with no more international trips this year, I am looking forward to 2025 and planning my trip to Asia in February with QSI’s Commercial Director for Asia, Sylvia Münzhuber. #relationshipbuilding #QSIteam #scotchwhiskyexports #qualityspiritsinternational

Reflecting on my Last Trip to Turkey As we embrace the holiday season, I find myself thinking back to my unforgettable trip to Turkey. Oh! how time flies….. It's been two years since I visited Turkey, and I fell in love with it at first sight.🤩 From the vibrant streets to the magical antiques and the intoxicating scents on the stalls, Turkey captivated me instantly. However, one of the memories that builds up the vibrant vibe of Turkish stalls is the sellers! They are some of the most assertive and charismatic sellers you can encounter. Entering a stall, you’re almost ready for their pushy yet charming sales techniques. My View on Turkish Sales Culture: Brave and Charismatic: Turkish sellers are fearless and versatile in their sales techniques, often trying to sell their products at premium prices. Skillful Negotiators: They are flexible yet assertive, showing a genuine desire to sell without compromising on value. As someone who understands sales, recognizing their tricks, like creating a sense of urgency or upselling, was quite a fun part of these holidays. The Turkish stall sales strategy, while effective in that environment, is totally different from building business relationships. This tactic works well for Turkish sellers because tourists are there for only a short period, making it less likely for them to become long-term customers. However, when building your presence on LinkedIn, the approach needs to be the opposite! Here are some key strategies for making your LinkedIn presence stand out: Quality Over Quantity On LinkedIn, don’t let your company page look like a market stall, sharing only content about your product or service. Instead, focus on quality interactions and meaningful content. Prioritize building relationships based on trust and mutual benefit. Avoid Immediate Sales Pitches Don’t DM your new connections with immediate sales intentions. People entering Turkish stalls expect to be bombarded by different sales techniques, but people logging into LinkedIn expect to build genuine, long-lasting connections. Engage with your network by sharing valuable insights and supporting others' professional goals. And how about you? Have you encountered unique sales cultures during your travels? Share your stories with our community below! 🌍✨ Let's continue to grow and inspire each other! 🌱🍀 #AuthenticConnections #DeepConnections #EthicalSales #Networking
