AI is reshaping education - but this doesn't necessarily spell disaster. "The Theory of Educational Technology", by scholars from the University of Cambridge and Manchester, explores how teaching can integrate AI programmes. Professor Rupert Wegerif and Dr Louis Major argue that it can help students' communication, both inside and outside the class. Technology in general has been the most important factor that influences the way education is being delivered but with the more prevalent technology of AI especially generative AI, it is important that we examined how the design element will impact education, especially through ethical and equitable lens. We often say that Education has three teachers, the environment, family/ community and the instructor but when tech is being design we tend to forget the Family. Great review of the book looking forward to reading more.

This week, I became Chair of Berkeley College’s AI Academic Integrity Committee. I’ll be honest. I have more questions than answers. ► What does Academic Integrity look like in an increasingly AI-dominated world? ► How do we think beyond AI detectors? ► How can we maintain trust between faculty and professors, as much as possible? As Darren Coxon recently noted, trust is everything in education. ► How can we create principles for Academic Integrity while maintaining academic freedom? Some faculty will incorporate AI fully. Some will (like me) incorporate it somewhat. Some will (like Melanie Dusseau resist it in their courses. We all have a right to determine our own approach. ► How can we include students in the process of determining what Academic Integrity is and how I preserve it? ►To what extend does adopting an AI scale (like the one developed by Leon Furze and Dr Mike Perkins) help? Or we do adopt the right light, green light approach? Or we do take on Danny Liu’s approach of giving students a proper “menu”? I have more. But these are more than enough to keep me up at night.

It made me reflect on my own experiences with AI and how it’s reshaping the way we learn. During high school, I saw firsthand how tools like ChatGPT could make a difference in Physics and Math classes. Today, AI acts as a tutor, simplifying complex topics—like intricate physics theories—and making them accessible to anyone. What’s even more exciting? AI empowers students to learn at their own pace. Gone are the days of asking the teacher a million questions (we’ve all been there). AI provides instant, tailored guidance, breaking down barriers to education and fostering inclusivity for learners of all speeds and styles. Just my perspective—what’s yours? How do you see AI shaping the classroom? 💭

In today’s fast-paced world, especially with the rise of AI, this quote is more relevant than ever. Education isn’t just about acquiring knowledge or mastering technology—it’s about shaping individuals who think deeply, question critically, and act with integrity. A holistic education goes beyond academics. It leaves room for building relationships, teaching values like honesty and respect, and nurturing students’ emotional and ethical foundations. These are the principles that help them navigate a complex world, make sound decisions, and prioritise the greater good. As AI becomes a bigger part of our lives, critical thinking becomes even more essential. We need to empower students to assess information carefully, remain rooted in their values, and use their intelligence to positively impact the world.

I was pleased to attend most of the sneak preview for these resources. I enjoyed hearing Pat Yongpradit discuss the resources and think that there is some really great info here. The resources offer five key policy ideas, a set of briefs on AI in education, relevant talking points, and a presentation deck. Drafts were informed and reviewed by over 70 organizations from the TeachAI advisory committee, government agencies, and policymakers. Yesterday, I was fortunate to attend a lecture by renowned design and philosophy professor Kees Dorst. Dorst is a professor at the University of Sydney and has written many foundational books about design. Two of his statements resonated with me regarding schools, colleges, and AI. They were: "Successful organizations mirror their environment." "You can't fall back on best practices because they worked in the past." (This one is not a direct quote but captures the idea he shared.) I believe that both of these ideas are important to consider as schools think about their future, especially with the rise of AI. For example, with AI becoming an increasingly significant part of society, does it make sense to ban or ignore it, considering that "successful organizations mirror their environment"? Also, can we base our current education system on "best practices" if AI is making many of those practices obsolete? These are just some points to ponder if you work in K-12 or higher education.
