Sometimes being the best isn't enough. This is my Surface Duo, the phone I've been using every day for more than three years. Odds are you've never even heard of it. And yet, for me it's been the most radically game-changing piece of hardware I've ever used for productivity. It's like the difference between a single 14" CRT monitor on my desk, and the three widescreen LCDs I currently use. No single device, not even my first Blackberry, made such a difference to my daily work productivity. If I forget my laptop, I hardly notice. (Don't worry, this isn't actually a tech hardware review). Microsoft created a piece of hardware that was revolutionary.... and yet there was basically no market uptake and they seem to have abandoned any current plans for evolving this product line. What happened? It's a big story, with many factors. But one of those was a failure to build support systems. Despite the best engineering ever seen in a mobile device, the software and support came nowhere near to matching that quality. Those who bought into the idea started to lose faith as the overall experience declined. It turned out that building the best phone ever wasn't nearly enough to make a real impact. It needed all of the supporting players to be executing at their best as well. That's my message for today. 💡 Being the star performer doesn't matter if you're not surrounded by a team and systems all operating at their best. 💡 Being the CEO means nothing if you're not investing in everyone around you, doing your best to help them grow. 💡 Honing your skills to perfection at whatever your work discipline is doesn't matter if you can't figure out how to work well with your team. 💥 And critically: you need to work on your software (soft skills), not just your hardware (hard skills)!
