Mixed income housing models are not just about the integration of various income levels or rent levels. They create space for the preservation of community assets, encourage diversification of neighbourhoods across all demographic groups, and encourage residents to become more actively engaged in their own advocacy - and advocacy for future generations. We’ve seen that diverse communities thrive and it’s important that we use National Housing Day, and every other day, to get more creative about how to meet the housing need in our country. Have a conversation with your friends, family, write to your politicians, engage with local housing organizations, ask your neighbours, build your network in a way that honours communities built to serve. That’s how we can all make a difference. #nationalhousingday #housingisahumanright

In Busia County, the Giving for Change Programme has successfully partnered with Dhamira Moja CBO to establish the Busia Community of Practice (COP), a platform for Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to collaborate on development issues. Key achievements include training 15 organizations on budget advocacy, leading to impactful memos on county budget documents that influenced government decisions. The COP has empowered local organizations to contribute to important policy discussions, including on gender, child protection, and disaster management, thereby driving meaningful community development. ⭐️ The Power of Community⭐️ In our journey towards liberation, the strength of community cannot be overstated. When we come together, sharing our resources, knowledge, and support, we create a powerful force for change. Collective efforts amplify our voices and foster resilience. Each one of us has a role to play in uplifting our communities, whether through advocacy, education, or simply being there for one another. I invite you to reflect: Where are your community ties? At Habitat for Humanity, our mission is to bring people together to build homes, communities, and hope. Today’s ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court on #JohnsonVGrantsPass – which aims to punish homeless residents for sleeping outside, even when they have no place to go – is counterintuitive to building community and hope. Jailing and fining human beings who are sleeping outside only makes homelessness worse. We hope that regardless of this ruling, communities in Oregon and beyond will take a more empathetic approach to working with community members without shelter. At the top of our minds is addressing the dire lack of affordable housing. We live in a time when many Americans struggle to afford housing – and the issue is especially acute in Oregon, where there is an extreme shortage of housing units. Affordable housing helps create the conditions that free families and individuals from stress and fear, helping build stability and confidence. We are motivated by today's ruling to lean into providing more affordable homes in communities across the state — through direct homebuilding and collective advocacy. Everybody deserves a decent place to live. We invite you to join us in taking meaningful, constructive actions — driven by empathy.

Housing issues—including issues related to access, rent increases, renovictions and homelessness—affect all four of the communities we connected with for our Community Briefs series. For example, in Chilliwack, we heard that some people’s rent was illegally doubled or tripled, and others were forced to leave their homes due to renovictions. Renovictions, coupled with low rental supply and rising living costs, contribute to the risk of homelessness. The Community Briefs offer an overview of human rights issues in four distinct B.C. communities: Chetwynd, Chilliwack, Cranbrook and Terrace. Research was conducted locally with the help of community organizations through focus groups and interviews, supplemented by quantitative data. Our Office produced other resources like presentations, handouts, and infographics for further learning, sharing and advocacy. DYK, Mutual Housing residents are linked with #affordablehousing advocacy opportunities both locally and statewide? Results from a consumer survey by NeighborWorks America, highlight the disconnect many are feeling with policymakers, with 75% feeling left out of the #affordablehousing conversation. In the spirit of #neighborworksweek, we’re celebrating the opportunities for connection we have successfully made this year between residents and State Legislators, California Housing and Community Development Department leaders, the State Treasurer, Sacramento Mayor, and other local elected officials. As residents are able to share their lived experiences, they are able to provide keen insights for decision makers and help to inform their policy choices surrounding severe housing shortage challenges. https://lnkd.in/giN72QwX
