Morgan Sindall Construction’s Eastern Counties business selected for Norfolk County Council’s (NCC) Major Construction Works Framework. The framework is divided into three lots and Morgan Sindall has been appointed to Lot 2, which is for larger, more complex projects including a mix of refurbishments, remodelling and new-build. Works under Lot 2 will have a value of more than £4.5m and the total value of all projects in this lot over the term is estimated at £300m. Morgan Sindall’s Eastern Counties Area Director, Alister Broadberry, says: "We have worked alongside Norfolk County Council for a number of years on a variety of projects, and to be selected on this framework represents a fantastic opportunity to continue our strong, collaborative relationship." 🏠 Contracts signed for construction of 72 houses in Monaghan   Monaghan County Council’s Housing section is pleased to announce that following a competitive tendering process, GEDA Construction have been chosen to construct 72 Houses in Monaghan town across two sites, namely Slí Lorcan, Latlorcan (51) and Slí na Coille, Mullaghmatt, Monaghan (21). The Housing Section are utilising an accelerated design and build contract which encourages Modern Methods of Construction (MMC). It is pleasing that GEDA have teamed up with a local timber frame manufacturing company IJM Timber Engineering Ltd to deliver these houses, with the first phase being delivered within 12 months. Speaking at the signing of the contracts Chief Executive for Monaghan County Council, Mr. Robert Burns stated “This is a good news story for Monaghan in that it will develop two former unfinished housing estates,  for much needed social housing, and I am particularly pleased to see the Council embracing modern methods of construction to optimise the use of off-site manufacturing materials, techniques and processes to increase the pace and scale of housing delivery”. Three miles of West Midlands Metro’s southern extension may never be built because construction costs are spiralling out of control. Suggestions that the line may terminate at Dudley were made at the West Midlands Combined Authority meeting on July 19, when it was explained that the project is now three years late, with the section under construction almost 50% over budget. The price of the line from Wednesbury to Merry Hill shopping centre, which was estimated to cost £449.5 million when approved in March 2019, is now running at £654.8m and could increase further. There are now suggestions that there may not be enough money to extend to Merry Hill, while the planned eventual terminus at Brierley Hill has been reduced in status to “proposed” on the official map. Price increases that have bedevilled the Metro project have been blamed on the rise in construction and energy costs (Dudley interchange is £8.7m higher because of “design flaws”), coupled with reduced fares income because of the COVID pandemic. When the first spades went into the ground in early 2017, it was expected that the full service from Wednesbury to Brierley Hill could be running by 2023, but it could now be up to another 18 months before it even reaches Dudley. The latest cost estimates are: Phase 1 (Wednesbury to Dudley) £393.5m; Phase 2a (Dudley to Waterfront Merry Hill) £227m; and Phase 2b (Waterfront Merry Hill to Merry Hill) £33.6m. The last phase - phase 2c, from Merry Hill to Brierley Hill town centre - was last estimated to cost £30m but is now not considered for future funding. The Department for Transport is expected to ask for a re-examination of the business case. And the opening of three stations along the Camp Hill line (at Moseley, Kings Heath and Pineapple Road), which have already been delayed until the end of this year, will now not open until autumn 2025 (RAIL 1014). 🗞️ An £800m modern methods of construction framework has been dominated by traditional builders who won 20 out of 22 places Winners of the Integrated Traditional Build & MMC framework have been revealed by Procurement for Housing (PfH) and Building Better. The alliance of housing associations and councils is working together to boost the use of MMC in social housing. It said 20 traditional construction companies and two MMC firms have been appointed to the new build framework where they will carry out principal contractor duties on social housing offsite projects. 12 months ago, we predicted 2023/24 would be a huge milestone for RED Construction Group, and we’re proud that we’ve met that and more, with a turnover over the £100m mark for the first time.
