As the construction season wraps up, Lucas Bromerchenkel, MASc. and I are back at it, focusing on #concrete education and training.
Today, we hosted a Municipal Exterior Flatwork Certification course with 11 inspectors from the City of Windsor and 7 contractors in attendance. It was the ideal mix of professionals, all working together to ensure consistency and understanding of municipal sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and pavements.
A special shoutout to the two utility contractors who traveled all the way from the City of Thunder Bay to participate in the course.
Concrete Ontario is excited to offer more sessions as municipalities increasingly embrace this important certification program.
Scope creep is like a minor home improvement project. It starts innocently enough—"Oh, while we're at it, why don't we just..."—and before you know it, you're redoing the plumbing, installing a hot tub, and considering a helipad for the roof! In our recent blog post, we discuss the root causes of scope creep in training projects, its impacts, and proactive measures organizations can adopt to combat it: https://hubs.li/Q02KbCZ20
I'm delighted to share that I'll be speaking at the Ontario Building Officials Association (OBOA) annual conference in the fall. I encourage all engineers working in sewers or I/I to learn the Codes, at least as they relate to sewers. Attending these conferences for years has provided me with many colleagues in the building industry, who helped me to wade through the Code until I understood. At one point I had an e-mail group of about 100 building officials that I tested my theories and asked questions of. They taught me everything! Thank you to all of my colleagues in the building industry for their ongoing support.
The first time I spoke at an OBOA conference (probably 6 years ago?), I was just learning and to say the audience was restive would be an understatement! Some of the guys stood up and yelled at me during my presentation 🤣 . Fair enough, nobody has ever talked about the stuff I presented before, and my *direct* style was probably a bit hard for them to swallow! I also was just starting to understand the Codes so didn't have the content perfected. I had to pass it over to my colleague Chris Manzon (formerly with the City of Windsor) for a minute to catch my breath.
Remember, engineers and others, you can take a course on house plumbing from OBOA. It's a great place to start.
By contrast, when I delivered the keynote at Ontario Onsite Waste Association Conference last month, half the audience were building officials and were VERY engaged and interested in my work. There's only one way to learn, and that's the hard way. In order to be the expert, you need to be willing to be wrong, a lot!
They purchased LOTs of "Sewers are NOT Trash Cans" signs.

At Bright Side Plumbing, we're more than just a team; we're lifelong learners and proud members of the top three plumbing organizations. Why does this matter? Because plumbing is an art backed by science and stringent codes that not everyone takes the time to understand.
In Kansas City and Missouri, anyone can claim they're a plumber without a license, making it tricky to distinguish the experts from the novices. But here's the Bright Side difference: we don't just call ourselves plumbers; we embody the term through constant education and strict adherence to plumbing codes.
We believe that every plumber should not only have a deep understanding of plumbing systems but also be well-versed in the many codes required for durable, lasting results. This commitment ensures that when you choose Bright Side Plumbing, you're choosing safety, quality, and peace of mind.
Is your plumber an active member of a plumbing code association? Ask them. It matters.

We are to fast to blame others for issues that we have the capability to fix. For example I've heard many different organizations blame school counselors for not pushing kids who would thrive in the trades, to construction. "All they do is push college" they say. But in reality whose fault is that? School Counselors push what they know. When they don't push kids into construction, it's not because they don't like the industry and have it out for us. For the most part this comes down to a lack of knowledge of the construction trades. How can you sell what you don't know? So we can continue to point fingers and hope things will change. But hope only gets you so far. As representatives of construction we need to educate the schools and the counselors ourselves. We can take control of our own future and change the narrative to better service our industry and our kids.
