Dopamine, or colloquially nicknamed the “happy hormone,” has been talked about and applied across various realms — from fashion to beauty to interior design — where the idea of dressing, decorating, or applying make-up in a joyful, colorful way helps to spur little bursts of happiness. Recently on TikTok, “dopamine menus” have abounded with users sharing carefully curated, colorful lists of activities and moments that bring them joy. In an age where screen times are at an all-time high, dopamine menus are a way of countering default social media scrolling with joy-inducing habits. This viral trend, kicked into gear by content creator, podcaster, and entrepreneur Payton Sartain, showcases simple things that spur joy in the form of a three-course meal. For starters, or things that will give an instant boost, some might do their skin care routine or stretch for a few minutes. Your main dopamine course consists of those longer activities like cooking a meal or going for a run, taking a long bath or trying a new nail look. Meanwhile, sides are reserved for things to do alongside mundane chores, like listening to your favorite song or calling a friend. The dessert portion of the dopamine menu includes activities that spark joy in the short term, but that should be limited in quantity — just like dessert — like watching a favorite TV show or playing video games.
