Here is why it's so hard to figure out what's next: because you're focusing on all the wrong things. It's not your fault - the world (this place especially) is full of noisy, fluffy advice dispensed in soundbites. A lot of it is useless. because, you can't rush to 'doing' when you haven't done the 'figuring out.' Here are the LAST things you should do: ❌ update your resume - save that for later. ❌ come up with some pithy LinkedIn 'header' or persona just because ❌ rush to reach out to your highest powered contacts with an ask - not until you have a crystal clear ask to ask them. Take a beat. Breathe. Use this time to explore foundational questions: 💚 when were you happiest at work? what were you doing? 💚 what is your 'unspoken reputation' in work AND in life? what do people tend to see you out for? 💚 how do you want to be remembered? what ultimately motivates you? Look for patterns here. Ask friends and sponsors for their take. walk in the woods. write. get some professional support to distill what you do know about where you're headed and what matters to you. THEN begin putting the other things into action. Don't move to tactics without a strategy. When you're at a crossroads, don't forget to view this as a chance to reconnect with who you are. I've presented and facilitated thousands of hours in my career. Even as an expert, I still don't get it right every time. I still have to write out what I'm going to say. I still have to practice. I still have to rehearse. And even with all that preparation, I don't get it right on the first try. Sometimes, I mess up. And sometimes, life happens. Google photos reminded me of one of those "life happens" moments. A few years ago, Iva Horka and I were asked to record a 2 minute video on a career development project to be shared with maybe a few hundred or a thousand people. A two-minute video should be easy to record, right? No, not when life happens. Thanks to my co-worker, Simba, my 2 minute video took way longer to record than it should have. Here's a few of my favorite clips. It made me laugh, as I'm sure it will make you laugh. And remember, next time you find yourself presenting or facilitating, be kind to yourself. Ask friends or coworkers what they think you're great at. Often, the things we enjoy doing are the things we're best at. Next, look at your past successes. What projects made you feel proud? What did you do to make them work? This can give you clues about your special talents. Think about what others struggle with. What do people often ask for your help with? That might be your special skill! It's what sets you apart from others. Once you know your special skills, it's time to show them off. Update your LinkedIn profile. 🌟 Why Motivation does not work 🌟 Have you ever felt a surge of motivation to start a new project, only to find yourself stuck when it's time to take action? The truth is, that motivation alone often isn't enough to keep us moving forward. 📉Motivation can be fickle, often starting low but growing once you begin.📈 This momentum is crucial, but it hinges on having clear, actionable goals. 🔑 The Importance of Setting the Right Goals Often, our goals are too abstract. For instance, "I want to find a job" is a goal, but it's too broad and complex. To make progress, you need to break it down into manageable sub-tasks that you can do within one day period. 📌 Enter the SMART Approach: - Specific: Define your goal clearly. What exactly do you want to achieve? - Measurable: Ensure you can track your progress. How will you know when you've achieved it? - Achievable: Set a goal that's challenging but possible. Is it within your capabilities? - Relevant: Make sure it aligns with your broader objectives. Why is this goal important to you? - Time-bound: Set a deadline. When do you want to achieve it by? 📍 For example, instead of saying "I want to find a job," break it down: "I will apply to five job postings every day,", "I will network with three industry professionals this week." and "I will create beautiful and informative resume". By making your goals SMART, you turn them into actionable steps, making it easier to start and maintain your progress. But I genuinely think and that the main point is not even the SMART system but specifics in goals you are setting.
