👵🏼👨🏽⚕️ Navigating Senior Care: The Challenge of Finding Specialized Doctors 👨🏽⚕️👵🏼 As our population ages, the demand for geriatricians—doctors specializing in senior care—is more critical than ever. Yet, finding a doctor trained to address the unique health needs of those over 65 remains a significant challenge. 🚶♀️💊 Why the scarcity? Despite their vital role, geriatricians comprise less than 1% of all physicians in the U.S. This gap is due to several factors: Stereotypes about aging deter medical students. Lower pay in geriatrics compared to other medical fields. Limited exposure during medical training. Geriatricians don't just manage illnesses; they understand the profound interplay between various age-related health issues and the importance of maintaining mobility and independence in older adults. 🧠🩺 Pat Early's experience highlights the life-changing support a geriatrician can offer, from managing complex health conditions to enhancing the quality of daily life through thoughtful, personalized care. 🌟 Isn't it time we reevaluate how our healthcare system prepares for an aging population? More training, better incentives, and greater recognition of geriatrics are crucial steps forward: https://wapo.st/3KlNjfI #SeniorCare #Geriatrics #Healthcare #AgingPopulation #inhomeconciergecare #tpctn

Implementing a Geriatrics Electronic Health Record (EHR) system is a transformative step that requires careful preparation and execution for success. Given the specific needs of senior patients—such as managing complex prescription regimens, tracking chronic diseases, and facilitating advance care planning—choosing the accurate EHR system and ensuring a smooth transition are essential for success. Assess geriatric practice to identify essential EHR features that enhance patient care, such as tools for managing polypharmacy and templates for cognitive assessments. Involve a diverse team, including physicians, nurses, and IT specialists, early in the process to ensure the chosen system fits smoothly into operations and meets the needs of elderly patients. This collaborative approach establishes a solid foundation for effective implementation and service delivery. The US is facing a crisis in supporting older adults' clinical and social care needs. Shockingly, we only have 7,300 certified geriatricians in the country, while we are estimated to need over 30,000 to serve the expanding senior population. Additionally, of the 2.5 million nurses in the US, only 15,000 are certified in geriatrics. This lack of specialized care is particularly concerning in rural and underserved areas, where over 40% of counties lack a single geriatrician. This exacerbates healthcare disparities and limits the reach of coordinated care models. #healthequity #olderadults #familycaregiving #carecoordination HealthHive, PBC American Society on Aging American Geriatrics Society AgeTech Collaborative™ from AARP Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association (GAPNA)
