As a lifelong advocate for water safety, I firmly believe that elementary schools should make weekly group swim lessons a cornerstone of their PE programs. Teaching children to swim isn’t just a skill; it’s a life-saving measure that builds confidence, promotes fitness, and prevents needless drownings. While many schools don’t have pools on campus, that’s not a roadblock—it’s an opportunity. By partnering with schools, community centers, or organizations that do have pools, we can bring these life-saving lessons to students who need them most. At Golden State Lifeguards, we’re already seeing the incredible impact of this approach. We’ve partnered with a San Fernando Valley school to teach 3rd through 5th graders how to swim properly. These lessons aren’t just about strokes and kicks; they’re about safety, discipline, and even teamwork. Through water-based team-building exercises, we’re helping students grow both as individuals and as part of a group. Investing in swim lessons today means fewer tragedies tomorrow. Growing up in a small, rural town without a YMCA, where pools weren’t accessible, our family’s approach to water safety, like many families of color, was to fear the water. At the Y, we are committed to making water safety and aquatics activities accessible and fun for everyone. I learned to swim when I became CEO of the YMCA of Greater Seattle in 2019. Although I recall being filled with trepidation and fear before my first swim lesson, I eventually became one with the water through my lessons at the YMCA. The reality is when parents don’t learn to swim, their kids are only 13% likely to learn. As part of National Water Safety Month, the Y encourages parents to take the plunge, learn to swim, and register your youth and family members for Y swim lessons and water safety classes. We're pleased to share the new standards for backyard pools, which highlight the importance of safety barriers for swimming pools. This new standard is a crucial step towards preventing child drownings in backyard pools. While fatal child drowning continues to decline, one-year-old toddlers still record the highest fatal drowning rate of any age group. Placing barriers between children and water is crucial, but remember that nothing replaces vigilant adult supervision.
