Alfa Mike Foxtrot: A Farewell to Brotherhood “Alfa Mike Foxtrot” – a phrase that echoes through the ranks, a blunt, no-nonsense way to say goodbye. In military life, goodbyes are more than just words; they’re a transition, a shift from one world to another. When it’s time to take that final step out of uniform and into civilian life, “Alfa Mike Foxtrot” captures the grit, camaraderie, and respect shared among those who served. It’s not just an exit but a bond expressed in the only way we know—raw and real. The military isn’t just a career; it’s a brotherhood. We’ve sweated through training, stood together through endless drills, and faced uncertainty as a team. That shared experience builds connections that last beyond duty stations and deployments. As we head into civilian life, we carry the spirit of that brotherhood with us. Though the uniform comes off, the bond remains.

As a U.S. Air Force veteran, I carry the values I learned in service with me every day: integrity first, service above self, and excellence in all we do. These principles shaped me, guiding not only my actions but my beliefs about what it means to live authentically and with purpose. To me, integrity isn’t selective. It’s about upholding standards universally, no matter who we are or where we stand. True integrity means applying our values consistently—not just when it’s convenient or comfortable, but when it challenges us to be better. In a world that often shows double standards, I find it hard to respect positions that lack authenticity and fairness. On this Veterans Day, I want to honor those who have served with integrity and commitment. I also encourage everyone to reflect on the values that drive us, remembering that integrity and excellence aren’t just words—they’re choices we make every day. Let’s set standards that we can all stand behind, building a legacy that reflects the best of who we are.

"A champion is someone who gets up when he can't" - Jack Dempsey, Heavyweight Boxer This is a quote that I carved into my desk when I was in high school and later wrote across the edges of my reefpoints at the Naval Academy. They are words that have echoed through my brain countless times whenever I am doing something difficult or I encounter an obstacle. To me, the quote boils down to toughness, resiliency, and the will to succeed. In life we have to be prepared to take hits, even get knocked down, and keep going. In the Navy, this is essential for continued operation and success of the mission. As leaders we have to make decisions and execute in the face of uncertainty, but what if we could mathematically analyze and plan for these changes? In this example we have 9 officers and 12 enlisted personnel scheduled to supervisory watch positions over a one month time period. However, O6 has an 80% chance of qualifying SDO, O10 has a 50% chance of qualifying EDO, and E13 has a 60% of qualifying EDPO. We have to publish a baseline schedule for the case where none of these individuals qualify even though there is only a 4% chance that this will be true. In my model, we look at each possible scenario (8 total) and minimize the range of dissatisfaction across the watchstanders, weighted by their likelihood. In the same model, we seek to minimize the total number of changes that would need to be made to the baseline schedule given a particular scenario came to fruition. Below, I have included a compressed version of the results with the full baseline schedule and only the watchstations that had a change to the schedule. Decision makers now have a pre-planned response to each of the potential qualification outcomes that minimizes changes that need to be made while maintaining equal loading of watches based on individual preferences. This ensures smooth, seamless operation while demonstrating care for the individuals. My model has now made a tough and resilient schedule that will succeed in uncertain conditions. For any thoughts on this model or examples you would like to see run, please leave a comment. For more on this model, see my past two posts. 🎖 Honoring Veterans and Celebrating Legacy As we reflect on service and sacrifice, I want to share a few things that being a Veteran taught me—lessons that extend well beyond the military. During my time in uniform, I learned about discipline, resilience, and teamwork in ways that shape how I approach every challenge. Military life didn’t just prepare me to serve my country—it taught me how to approach every aspect of my life with purpose and integrity. From strategic planning to mentoring others, these lessons continue to guide my journey. Today, I apply those same principles in helping teams and individuals craft their own visions and build paths to their goals. Veterans have unique perspectives that bring resilience and resolve to any environment, and I’m proud to carry that legacy forward in my work. Veterans Day is a reminder that service doesn’t end when we leave the military. It’s about applying what we’ve learned and continuing to make an impact—whether on a team, in a community, or in personal growth. To my fellow Veterans—how has your service shaped your journey? Let’s share and celebrate the ways we’re all still making a difference.

Admiral James Stockdale was a United States Navy vice admiral and aviator who was awarded the Medal of Honor in the Vietnam War, during which he was a prisoner of war for over seven years. Stockdale was the most senior naval officer held captive in Hanoi, North Vietnam. He became known for a principle that he taught called The Stockdale Paradox, which Jim Collins mentions in his book Good to Great. Here is what Stockdale taught: “You must never confuse faith that you will prevail in the end with the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality.” It was that principle that allowed him to survive in captivity. And there are many ways we can apply this in our personal and professional lives as well. In any area of our life where we haven’t fully achieved our potential or reached our goals it is important that we first have the belief that we can accomplish it, but also face the facts that are holding us back so that we can identify the roadblocks and make the appropriate adjustments to push towards the goal. I can think of a few areas in my life where this applies. What area is it for you? I hope this will inspire you to take a few minutes to think about that and reset your belief that you can achieve your goals, but also take a hard look at the obstacles that you need to develop a plan to overcome. Have a great week, and Keep Your Mindset Reset!! 💡 #mondaymindsetreset
