Sometimes, what’s missing for your illustration to come to life is contrast. Contrast is one of the basic principles of design, and with it, you can make your project more eye-catching. The greater the difference between colors, shapes, and lines, the better! It’s also essential for improving readability and creating focal points, and can be used intentionally. Let me show you the technique I use to work more consciously. After setting the main colors, I add a black layer in color mode so that the illustration turns black and white. This helps me see more clearly what is darker and what is lighter. The color hues can confuse this adjustment, so I prefer to view it in black and white. In the example below, in the colored image “B,” it’s hard to notice that the taxi has the same brightness as the asphalt. But when it’s in black and white, this similarity becomes more apparent. From there, I adjust the darker colors to ensure they have good contrast between each other. Adjusting saturation also helps lighten or darken specific areas. I keep alternating between these settings until I find the ideal balance.
