Over 40,000 people lose their lives to traffic violence every year in the US. That's the entire population of Culver City wiped off the face of the earth every single year. Why? Road design is made for car speed over peoples' safety. It is a crisis we can end. But we need political will. Start by honoring the victims of traffic violence on World Day of Remembrance November 17th, and then organize, vote and make sure your local leaders prioritize your life over speed and driver convenience. Prior to the 1973 Oil Embargo shaking the world, highway policies were the same in the US, Sweden, and Denmark. All favored higher speeds. All had the same safety record. All required the same oil use of 43 megawatt-hours per person per year. Following the Embargo US policies continued with sprawl. Sweden/Denmark shifted to make streets safe for commerce, pedestrians, and bikes cutting per person oil use to 60% below the US and road-kills of bike riders and pedestrians to 400% below the US. Highway road-kills are designed into US highway policies by policy makers.
