🌱 Designing for a Sustainable Future: Insights into Eco-Design and Evolving Regulations 🌍 The journey toward sustainability in product design and fashion is being shaped by groundbreaking regulations and frameworks that emphasize transparency, accountability, and circularity. Here’s what’s making waves in eco-design and sustainable product development: Eco-Design & Circularity The Eco-Design for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) is a game-changer, embedding circular design principles into product creation. By focusing on reusability, repairability, and recyclability, this directive aims to reduce waste at its source, ensuring sustainability is woven into every stage of a product’s lifecycle. Supply Chain & Reporting Transparency is at the forefront: • The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) demands that companies provide detailed insights into their supply chains and environmental impacts. • NY’s Fashion Sustainability and Social Accountability Act is pushing for clear disclosure of supply chain data and sustainability targets. These frameworks help consumers and stakeholders hold brands accountable, preventing greenwashing and fostering trust. Worker Protections • The NY Fashion Workers Act and CA Garment Worker Protection Act are safeguarding labor rights, ensuring fair wages, and incentivizing ethical production. • The CA Responsible Textile Recovery Act introduces extended producer responsibility (EPR) for textile recycling, highlighting the importance of waste prevention. Preventing Greenwashing The EU Green Claims Directive tackles misleading environmental claims, ensuring companies back up their sustainability messaging with measurable, verifiable data. A Call to Action As innovators, designers, and changemakers, we are at the heart of this transformation. By embracing these policies and incorporating eco-design principles, we can drive a future where sustainability is not a choice but a standard. Together, we can change fashion—and through fashion, we can change the world. #Sustainability #EcoDesign #CircularEconomy #FashionForGood #SupplyChainTransparency #WorkerRights Foto credits: Thomas Bernhardt-Lanier

Textile reuse is the process of using existing textiles to create new products without the need to convert them into new fabrics. It can take place in many ways, such as repairing used textiles, creating clothes or accessories from existing textiles or converting textiles into other products such as bags or blankets. This can help reduce the environmental impact of the textile industry: it reduces the need to produce new textiles and use natural resources to do so. Reuse of textiles has become increasingly important in the modern era: environmental awareness is growing among people and the textile industry is one, like many other industries, of the sources of pollution. #textilereuse #fashion #sustainablefashion #sustainability

🌿 Why Leather is the Sustainable Choice We Need to Talk About 🌿 In a world increasingly concerned with sustainability, it’s essential to highlight materials that meet these values. Leather, often misunderstood, stands out as a remarkable example of sustainability, durability, and beauty. Here’s why choosing leather is a step towards a greener future: By-Product Utilization: Leather is primarily sourced from the meat industry, transforming what would otherwise be waste into valuable products. This process not only minimizes waste but also contributes to a more sustainable consumption cycle. Longevity and Durability: Unlike synthetic alternatives, high-quality leather products age gracefully, lasting for decades. This durability means less waste, fewer replacements, and a smaller environmental footprint. Biodegradability: At the end of its life, genuine leather biodegrades much faster than synthetic materials, which can take hundreds of years to break down, contributing to landfill mass and releasing microplastics into our ecosystems. A Circular Economy Champion: The leather industry is innovating to make the most of by-products and offcuts, contributing to a circular economy where waste is minimized, and materials are reused and recycled. While no material is without its environmental impact, leather’s unique properties and the industry’s commitment to improvement make it a choice worth considering for those who prioritize sustainability. Let’s embrace materials that support a healthier planet. 🌍💼👞 #Sustainability #EcoFriendly #LeatherGoods #SustainableFashion #CircularEconomy #WasteReduction #Biodegradable #EcoConscious #SustainableLiving #GreenInnovation #EnvironmentallyFriendly #FashionForFuture #SustainableMaterials #EthicalFashion #EcoDesign #SustainableChoice #Craftsmanship #GreenFuture #EcoFashion #ResponsibleFashion #FashionSustainability

🛠 REINVENTING BUSINESS - 100 months as a "legal alien" in the textile industry (Part 4/5) 🛠 The old business model - design, produce, sell - no longer works in a world of limited resources and mounting waste. The writing is on the wall: the days of linear production are numbered. When we focussed our strategy in 2016 on “Closing the Loop”, barely anybody did understand what we were talking about. This year, the EU has formally launched the #ESPR regulation, making textiles a primary focus. It’s a call for a complete overhaul in the textile industry we have regularly echoed – and a wake-up call to redesign all our business (and mental) models. By 2028, we must rethink everything. At Sympatex, we’re not waiting. Designing products with their end in mind, engaging with new stakeholders, and pioneering pre-competitive, cross-industry collaboration are key. Our mission? 100% circularity by 2030. That means 100% recycled materials in, 100% recyclable mono-materials out. We’re proud to be already at 95%+ recyclable mono-material in our apparel portfolio, with 66% of it sourced recycled and 25% even fiber-to-fiber. The future is #Circular. The time to rethink is now. https://lnkd.in/dhCP4AD6 #Steadfast #100MonthsInTextiles #CircularEconomy #SustainableDesign #TextileRevolution #Sympatex #MentalModels

Are you ready to response to regulators move away from “carbon tunnel vision” toward a more comprehensive look at the overall impact of how we produce and consume products? The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (#ESPR), which entered into force on 18th July 2024, mandates comprehensive ecodesign requirements for various product groups. #Textiles is one of the propriety product groups and the one where the EU ambitions are most developed. My colleagues Ana Carneiro and Evelyne Keller, PhD share what we know currently about the EU's ambitions for textiles in this insight piece
