If the AFL won’t bring back Origin, sometimes you have to do it yourself. Here’s a throwback to one of my favourite projects - first pitched by Braden Quartermaine - where we picked WA and Victorian State of Origin sides and had Champion Data simulate a game between them. It started with selection panels featuring the likes of Dennis Cometti, Leigh Matthews and Mike Sheahan, then we had the public vote to round out the squads. It was one of the first major collaborations between The West Australian, 7NEWS Australia and PerthNow with digital, print and broadcast elements. This was back in 2018 as well, I can only imagine what we would do with a similar campaign today. Why did it do so well? It had key elements: ✅ Audience participation in the process ✅ A topic and a process designed to spark debate ✅ Multiple ways to engage with the core concept And WA ended up winning the simulation narrowly.
