🔔 Calling all managers and owners of heritage sites! 🔔 Historic Houses has commissioned Harlow Consulting to carry out survey on the impacts of VAT on the repair and maintenance of publicly accessible listed buildings, and the potential for a VAT rebate scheme. This is the first detailed survey-based research into this longstanding problem. We are highly unlikely to change Government policy on the removal of reliefs for independent schools, but we do have an opportunity to help shape how the VAT legislation is implemented by responding to HM Treasury's consultation. As limited as the scope of question posed is, I would encourage all affected organisations to contribute so that the broadest possible picture can be considered by Treasury ahead of the 15 September deadline. The rent-a-room scheme is a set of special rules designed to help homeowners who rent-a-room in their home to create a valuable tax free income stream. If you are using this scheme, you should ensure that rents received from lodgers during the current tax year do no exceed £7,500. The tax exemption is automatic if you earn less than £7,500 and there are no specific tax reporting requirements. Homeowners can opt out of the scheme and record property income and expenses as usual if this is beneficial. #RentARoom #TaxFreeLetting
