This article (in Danish) reflects my personal journey with my son, who is now 12 years old. He began walking at 10 months and has always been sensitive, with an emotional intelligence (EQ) that is above average. However, as a young child, he didn’t have the language to express this, and as a parent, I struggled to understand what was happening. All I saw was a dissatisfied child.
In the second grade, we had his IQ tested, and the results confirmed that he is gifted. It’s important to note that being gifted is different from being talented or skilled. Giftedness is more about having untapped potential—it’s like having a faster computer, but you still need to learn how to use it effectively. I prefer the term “fast brain” because it emphasizes this potential without assuming that it automatically translates to success.
We’ve spent over DKK30.000 on private professional help. We were informed that a diagnosis of autism or ADHD is often necessary to access public system support. We’ve also spent countless hours in “dialogue meetings” with 5-7 representatives from the school and public authorities. At one point, I told them that I could no longer participate in these so-called dialogue meetings and suggested that they invite me to an action meeting instead.
Much of our time has been spent arguing the correlation between giftedness and dissatisfaction. Research shows that when gifted children are challenged in areas of interest, their well-being improves. However, in our municipality, support and guidance are only available to parents unless the child receives official approval for assistance—a process that can take 1-2 years. Meanwhile, children with dyslexia face even greater challenges in our public schools.
What frustrates me most is the enormous cost to society. Instead of contributing to the economy by going to work, parents like me are forced to spend endless hours in meetings that often lead nowhere. This not only drains family resources but also results in lost productivity and potential for the workforce. The risk of losing a generation of innovative potential because our school system only supports the average student is a high price to pay. Gifted children who don’t see the point of school are at significant risk of becoming disengaged or disruptive in the classroom. As they grow up, the lack of support can lead to depression, anxiety, and even suicide because they never learn how to navigate a world that feels more overwhelming to them than to others.
Fortunately, starting in 2024, all children in Denmark will be screened to identify those with exceptional potential. When my son started 6th grade, the school proudly informed us that they had launched a pilot project for gifted children in grades 2-5. I hope our efforts have helped pave the way for others. The best news is that the teachers have received training in handling gifted children, and my son remains at the school, where his friends from kindergarten are still by his side.

Purpose Anxiety 🚩 Is that something you can recognize?
Being so deeply afraid of 'not leaving your mark on the world'? Leaving a legacy? Creating an impact so large that it will outlive you?
I get you. I've been there. In fact, I did a TEDx speech on this about 8 years ago 😮💨 However, I've stopped chasing that grand, shiny purpose.
Why?
Because I realized that I'm not that important...
I don't really matter in the larger scheme of things. I don't need to 'be someone important', or 'create something important'.
And telling myself otherwise only puts more pressure on myself, stresses me out, and essentially is a huge ego-driven belief that only distracts me from what I truthfully love to do.
I think our culture of being so obsessed with 'leaving a mark' is all a house of mirrors. An illusion keeping us in a maze, chasing our own tails.
I've given myself a permission slip to play full out, on my own terms. Selfishly, greedily almost.
Doing what *I* love. What *I* feel deeply inspired to do. Not to prove anyone anything, or to 'leave a mark'.
I've quit the larger-than-life-purpose club, and I invite you to do the same...
Find YOUR unique lane of joy, excitement, inspiration, and fulfillment instead.
Internal purpose ✅ > External purpose ❌
The CEO of NVIDIA recently pointed out in a graduation speech (and I'm paraphrasing), that young people are too ambitious, that he, despite the insane success of NVIDIA, actually has quite low expectations of himself, and that just does what he loves.
To me it sounds like he gave himself the permission slip to be in his genius. In what he loves.
And from there, the magic happens.
Do you often think about your greater purpose in life? 🏔️
Purpose anxiety, misunderstood feminism, culture that domesticates, and much more in the latest episode of 'Iværksætteri i Harmoni' 🇩🇰 Thanks Nicki Largré for a great conversation!

PLEASE WRITE & CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES & the Whitehouse to demand that they stop helping Israel kill and starve children, commit war crimes, and maintain its brutal and racist apartheid, with our tax dollars.
Please also watch and share this new interview of Jewish-American Prof. Jeffrey Sachs explaining how Israel is continuing its genocide in Gaza, blatantly ignoring the U.N. International Court of Justice. He also explains how we, the U.S., are complicit in this genocide for funding it and providing the weapons, and how Israel is trying to get us into a war with Iran, against our national interests (8 minutes from Feb 17, 2024 interview): https://lnkd.in/gNHwwyhJ
And do you really want a foreign country to have this much control over our government?
Professor John Mearsheimer from the University of Chicago explains the extraordinary control that Israel’s lobby has over our politicians and government, and how it is bad for both our country and Israel (11 minutes from Feb 15, 2024 interview): m.com/watch?v=syB9THtXd7M
To really understand this horrible conflict, you have to put yourself in the shoes of an average Palestinian refugee (most of the 2.2M people in Gaza). What would you do if someone stole your house and livelihood, killed some of your family members in the process, left the rest of you with nothing, and forced you to live in the squalor of a refugee camp? That is what Israel did to over 750,000 Palestinian in 1948, over 300,000 in 1967, and over 250,000 since then, and more every year. Most of the families in Gaza owned homes, farms, or shops where Israeli cities and towns now stand, which Israel literally stole from them. Many still even have the keys, and some homes still stand with Jewish immigrants living in them now.
And even when Palestinians have tried to protest peacefully, Israel would shoot them in the knees, kill, or at least imprison and beat them. If you don't believe it, please read this 2020 Haaretz article titled: '42 Knees in One Day': Israeli Snipers Open Up About Shooting Gaza Protesters. It describes how IDF snipers would shoot many peaceful protesters in the kneecaps and ankles to cripple them, while shooting and killing many others, including journalists and medics: https://lnkd.in/g4VqQRzs
I also cry for the 36 innocent Israeli children killed on October 7th, but this horrible conflict did NOT start on that day. The proof is the nearly 2300 Palestinian children Israeli soldiers and settlers killed between the year 2000 and October 2023, including 43 children during the 9 months just before October 7th (all names & details documented on BTselem.org).
Not to mention Israel’s brutal 57 year occupation/apartheid, and the blockade of Gaza since 2005 — both illegal under international law, and simply immoral and inhumane.
