Congratulations to the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries' staff involved for their achievements being recognised. But "embodying the IFoA's core values"? What are the IFoA's core values when the IFoA defends religious texts that advocate serious crimes (including wife beating, child marriage, rape and slavery) against criticism? When the IFoA withholds important data (such as the number of new students joining, the student dropout rate, the numbers of students investigated for suspected cheating/found guilty each year, the amount of money spent on litigation and overseas travel), not only from the public, but even from its own members? When the IFoA holds a conference in Riyadh, 15 minutes from a place where thousands of people have been beheaded, flogged or maimed in recent years? When the IFoA holds its AGM in China, at a time when China is threatening Taiwan? Award Episode II: Setting a minimum standard of merit for those presenting awards within your professional domain is crucial. It's essential to acknowledge that, even in the act of awarding individuals, a specific level of quality and eligibility must be maintained by the award givers themselves. We must not underestimate the significance of ensuring that the recognition, whether in the form of an award or acknowledgment, is rooted in genuine merit and excellence. It is imperative that those conferring the recognition have earned the minimum quality required to assess others. Upholding these standards not only adds credibility and value to the entire recognition process but also strengthens the importance of achievements within our professional sphere.
