Five decades on and, according to the experts, contamination remains the leading cause of the early demise of most hydraulic components/systems. The blame extends to all corners of the industry. However, the lion's share of the blame is on the shoulders of the folks that design hydraulic systems. Safety should always be on the top of the list of design objectives. Regrettably, it doesn't even feature. The folks that teach hydraulic engineers don't seem to think safety is important, so it goes unnoticed and unchallenged. Another vital design objective should to keep maintenance people out of hydraulic systems. So why in the world, when it's a foregone conclusion that a hydraulic system is going to be covered in dirt and debris from the moment its commissioned, do design engineers put in-tank filters in hydraulic reservoirs. Here's a question for design engineers: have you ever changed an in tank filter element in the field when the reservoir is literally covered with the very material that is going to destroy an entire hydraulic system? It's akin to having an enemy at one's door and then opening it. If you believe the mechanic working at minus 40ºF is going to somehow clean the reservoir with a pressure washer, dream on! Moreover, where is the mechanic going to clean the parts and pieces that are covered in grit and sand? Next, if the machine is in an environmentally sensitive area, how is the mechanic going to deal with the oil that is pouring out of the filter? Where is the mechanic going to put the filter? Last but not least, what is the new filter comes without a new gasket or seal, and the mechanic doesn't have one. Now, you are going to force the mechanic to either contend with an oil leak, or they are going to have to glue it together with a sealant. Here's an example of an HPU in a paper processing plant with an in-tank filter. The overall design of the HPU is so poor, that the owner has to keep two spare HPU's available to keep up with breakdowns and maintain production targets. Not only is this HPU an embarrassment to prudent HPU engineering practices, but it's a testimony to the lack of pride in the fluid power industry. If this was a car no engineer would ever buy it.
