The latest issue of Modern Lawyer is now live on Globe Law Online: https://lnkd.in/eSjXT68X Life is often described as a journey rather than a destination, a sentiment echoed across countless inspirational posters, mouse mats, and coffee mugs. As the summer finally hits its stride, we’ll all no doubt be dreaming of indulging in some mini-journeys of our own, with the end goal being rest and relaxation. In this issue, we delve into how careers, particularly in the legal profession, can be viewed as journeys of growth, with destinations that may remain unknown until we reach them. Much like planning a holiday, where anticipation and discovery are integral parts of the experience, the trajectory of a legal career is marked by constant change and the pursuit of reward. Featuring contributions from Alex Davies, Heidi K. Gardner, Naïs Mouret, J.D., B.C.L., Nicole Bigby, Oliver Hansard, Claire Rason, Steve Nelson, Donna McGrath, Laura McNair (She/Her/Hers), Lisa Unwin, and Andrew White.

As an Associate Director at BCL Legal, leading our London practice, I've seen the landscape for international lawyers seeking roles in the UK's bustling capital. Here's a distilled essence of strategies that can help you navigate this competitive market: 🔍 Research Thoroughly: Understand the legal market in London. It's dynamic, diverse, and highly competitive. Familiarize yourself with the key players, the prominent law firms, and the sectors that are thriving. 🌉 Bridge the Qualification Gap: Ensure your qualifications are recognized. For non-UK lawyers, this may involve taking the SQE to convert your qualification to a UK one. 🌐 Leverage Your Unique Perspective: Emphasize your international experience. London law firms value diverse perspectives that can navigate cross-border complexities. 🤝 Network, Network, Network: Build a robust network both online and offline. Attend legal events in London, join professional groups, and engage with the legal community on platforms like LinkedIn. 📝 Tailor Your CV: Highlight your relevant experience and adapt your CV to the UK market. 💼 Engage with Specialist Recruiters: Partner with recruiters who specialize in placing international lawyers in London. At BCL Legal, we understand the nuances of this transition and can provide tailored support. 🐾 Show Your Human Side: Don't be afraid to showcase your personality. My cocker spaniel often features in my conversations, reminding my network that behind the legal expertise, there's a person with passions and a life outside work. 📈 Stay Informed: Keep abreast of UK-specific legal developments and trends. Being knowledgeable about recent changes can give you an edge in interviews and networking conversations. Remember, securing a legal role in London is not just about your qualifications and experience; it's also about how well you can integrate into the legal community and contribute to the vibrant tapestry of London's legal sector. #LegalCareers #LondonLaw #InternationalLawyers

Here is a recent Bloomberg Law article, on KPMG legal arm closing in Hong Kong, by Rose Walker and Chris Opfer that I was quoted in. Just about every week, we have Lateral Link recruiters being relied on by major news publications for our insight on the markets we have extensive knowledge, deep ties and relationships in. When considering a lateral move or seeking career advise long-term, consider working with recruiters who are the most knowledgeable in their markets. A recruiter can be much more than just someone who submits a candidate's resume around during a job search. A recruiter can be a long-term career advisor (focusing first on career advancement in one's current firm) and source of market information, always just a text or call away. #china #biglaw #hongkong #attorneyrecruiting

We recently placed an international lawyer with a fantastic international boutique 🌍 Their journey inspired me, and it might inspire you too. Here's what they achieved: Imagine this: leaving behind the comfort of your home country and taking a leap of faith to move to London. It's not just a move; it's an adventure. This lawyer did just that and landed a role in one of the most dynamic cities in the world. London isn't just about iconic red buses and Big Ben; it's a global hub of opportunities and experiences. What struck me about this lawyer's journey was their determination. They didn't just find a job; they carved out a new life. Balancing the daunting legal exams, networking in a completely new market, and adapting to British culture - they nailed it. Why am I sharing this? Because taking risks can lead to incredible rewards. If you're thinking about a big move or career change, go for it. Your dream role could be waiting just around the corner. ✔ Take risks ✔ Embrace new opportunities ✔ Create your own path Share your thoughts! Have you ever taken a leap like this? This is the first of an irregular series offering advice to junior lawyers I'm incredibly lucky in my job. With 20 years experience in the market I have a vast network of partners I speak to. The team also provide support and guidance to junior lawyers at the start of their careers. I therefore thought it would be helpful to ask my partner network what advice they'd given their younger selves. Up first is to remember not to go down rabbit holes - good advice for all of us but especially for junior lawyers. As you start a new role, or are embarking on your career it's normal to want to impress your colleagues and partners with your excellent research skills, legal knowledge and ability to draft extensive legal notes. These are all important skills to develop as a lawyer. However, it's vital to keep the client's commercial needs front and centre. What is the client trying to achieve, what are their goals, concerns or risks? Having this as your main focus will develop your ability to think commercially on behalf of your clients. This is what clients really want from their lawyer. An ability to do this well will help you stand out, and build your network quickly.

💡💡Great 10 reasons by Marieke Witkamp FCIArb as to why you should want to hire a foreign qualified attorney: “1️⃣ Are 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘄 2️⃣ 𝗘𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 3️⃣ Have 𝗴𝗿𝗶𝘁 4️⃣ Are 𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 to new circumstances 5️⃣ Are 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 6️⃣ Have 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 7️⃣ Have 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 8️⃣ Are 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 9️⃣ and 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗹 🔟 and add 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 of thought, experiences and background to your team”

Last week I posted a shout-out to all (Foreign) LLM students who are graduating as the Class of 2024. 🎓 A lot of foreign qualified lawyers connected with me after my post. It was clear that many people had similar experiences with building a new legal career abroad. That it is definitely possible but it is not always easy. That getting yourself qualified to practice law in a new jurisdiction is not always enough. That you need a lot of perseverance and other qualities to be successful in a new country. I also realized that foreign qualified lawyers have a lot of qualities in common that make them really valuable employees and colleagues. These qualities may sometimes be overlooked when foreign lawyers apply for jobs as they often don't match the standard candidate profile. 📣 So I have a message for employers: when you are lucky enough to interview a foreign qualified lawyer in the near future, please know that they: 1️⃣ Are 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘄 2️⃣ 𝗘𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 3️⃣ Have 𝗴𝗿𝗶𝘁 4️⃣ Are 𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 to new circumstances 5️⃣ Are 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 6️⃣ Have 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 7️⃣ Have 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 8️⃣ Are 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 9️⃣ and 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗹 🔟 and add 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 of thought, experiences and background to your team So give them a chance to prove they will be an invaluable hire! To all the lawyers who are in the process of breaking into a new jurisdiction: good luck!! And to all the lawyers who already built a career in a new jurisdiction: well done to you!!
