The situation in Chinatown is deeply concerning. The livelihoods of local businesses, the homes of residents, and the rich cultural heritage of the community are at risk of being erased, overshadowed by the construction of a massive arena. It is crucial that any development in the area incorporates elements of Chinatown's history and culture. The arena should feature authentic establishments like Sang Kee, dim sum carts, bubble tea cafés, and rolled ice cream shops to preserve the cultural identity of the neighborhood. Additionally, efforts must be made to educate visitors, both tourists and locals, about the significance of Chinatown’s history, arts, culture, and people. A focus on genuine, culturally representative offerings—not just mainstream chains like Chickie’s and Pete’s or overpriced milkshake shops—would be essential. Furthermore, it is only fair that businesses from Chinatown be supported or subsidized in the face of these changes, to help mitigate the harm caused by the redevelopment.
This situation is truly appalling.
Today’s City Council vote is a critical milestone in the development of 76 Place at Market East and we would not be here without the tireless efforts of so many. We would like to thank Council President Kenyatta Johnson, Councilmember Mark Squilla, and all of the Councilmembers who voted in favor of the project. We would also like to thank Mayor Parker and her administration for their support. The leadership that Council and the Mayor have displayed embodies a greater vision for Philadelphia. They recognize how important this project is for the revitalization of our city. We would also like to give a heartfelt “thank you” to our many supporters and partners over the past two years for championing this project. Although a lot of work has been done to get here, we know there is much more to do. We look forward to pursuing the remaining approvals to make 76Place a reality.

1moHopefully this Council will perform services, and fund infrastructure across all the Wards and Boundaries throughout and not solely focus on an individual area, like the last 2 Councils. Time to improve and move forward, good luck.
