The Colored Hockey League of the Maritimes (CHL) was an all-Black ice hockey league founded in 1895 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Established by Black Baptist leaders and intellectuals—including Pastor James Borden, James A.R. Kinney, James Robinson Johnston, and Henry Sylvester Williams—the league aimed to attract young Black men to Sunday worship by organizing hockey games between rival churches after services. At its peak, the CHL featured teams from across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, with notable teams such as the Halifax Eurekas and the Amherst Royals. The league operated from 1895 into the 1930s, with interruptions during and after World War I and eventual dissolution during the Great Depression. The CHL was known for its fast, physical, and innovative style of play. It is credited with pioneering several techniques that have become integral to modern hockey. For instance, the league allowed goaltenders to leave their feet to cover the puck—a practice not permitted elsewhere until the formation of the National Hockey League (NHL) in 1917. Additionally, Eddie Martin of the Halifax Eurekas is believed to have been the first player to use the slapshot in 1906. Despite its significant contributions, the CHL's history was largely overlooked for many years. In recent times, efforts have been made to recognize and honor the league's legacy. In 2020, Canada Post issued a commemorative stamp featuring the 1906 champion Halifax Eurekas to celebrate the history of Black hockey players in Canada. In 2024, the league was declared an event of national historic significance by Parks Canada. The CHL's impact on professional hockey is evident in the widespread adoption of innovations that originated within the league. Techniques such as the butterfly style of goal tending and the slapshot have become fundamental aspects of the game. Moreover, the league's existence challenged racial barriers and paved the way for future generations of Black athletes in hockey, contributing to the gradual diversification of the sport. https://lnkd.in/g5EhxYsU #blackhistory #hockey

Exciting Times Ahead for Inline Hockey! Hi All, We all know that last season had its challenges, but thanks to everyone's hard work and dedication, our leagues not only started but also successfully completed their seasons! The West League introduced a new Junior league across various age groups and a new C League, while the North West Rink organized an end-of-season nationals for the Senior A & B teams. Amidst the recent rumours and uncertainty about the new season, we have some fantastic news to share. The league's new committee has posted an update: "Hi All, We wanted to provide some clarity amidst the recent, negative rumours. Following the director of BRHA stepping down last season, the committee has decided to take this opportunity to reassess our direction. We will be discontinuing the BRHA brand and moving forward as the UK Inline Hockey Federation (UKIHF). Our focus will be on grassroots development, reinvesting in our communities, and ensuring transparency within the sport. We appreciate your patience as we finalize the details. Registration will open soon, and I'll keep you updated on the progress. Sportily is also being updated with new information. We’re excited for the 24/25 season and look forward to seeing everyone there!" The Lions are proud to be part of this new era, which promises to be our biggest season yet! We will have teams in the Junior league for under 8s, 10s, and 12s, two teams in the West C league, one team in the North West B League, and one team in the North West A league. Additionally, we are excited to participate in the 2025 On The Rocks female tournament in Ireland this February, and our senior team is gearing up for an international tournament! Inline hockey has faced challenges since the 2020 pandemic, but with the sport growing again, especially at the youth level, and the positive direction of the UKIHF, the future looks incredibly bright. My Pathway to Pro Hockey: Logan Vande Meerakker Learning more about Logan's hockey journey from Jr. B to pro hockey in the SPHL was amazing. That's why we thought it was important to pass on that information, as he had some great advice for young athletes. -The Game is 90% mental and confidence is key. -Don't try to pass up the good plays for a great play, as time and space become increasingly limited. -Your hockey journey won't be linear. #hockey #juniorhockey #collegehockey #prohockey

🏒 The National Hockey League (NHL)'s Game-Changing Generation: Shattering Stereotypes with Skill and Sarcasm 👏 As a relatively new fan of the NHL, having started following the sport just a year ago, I've been thoroughly impressed by the league's recent campaign showcasing its young talent. This initiative has not only captivated my interest but also challenged prevailing stereotypes about Generation Z in a refreshingly clever way. What stands out most is the campaign's brilliant use of sarcasm, incorporating quotes that many young people, including myself, often hear. The NHL cleverly juxtaposes these clichés with examples of extraordinary achievements by young players, effectively dismantling these stereotypes. Players like Bedard and Jack Hughes are redefining what it means to be a young professional athlete in today's world. Their skill, dedication, and maturity on and off the ice demonstrate the positive attributes of our generation, breaking away from often unfair characterizations of Gen-Z. Not only this campaign but the decision to feature the Hughes brothers on the cover of NHL 25 is chef's kiss and further emphasizes the league's commitment to highlighting its young stars. This move not only celebrates their achievements but also inspires younger fans like myself to pursue excellence in their chosen fields. As we continue to witness the rise of these young talents, it's clear that the NHL is embracing a new era. This forward-thinking approach not only rejuvenates the sport but also sends a powerful message about the potential and capabilities of young professionals across all industries. The campaign's blend of humor and impressive feats resonates deeply with my generation. It acknowledges the stereotypes we face while simultaneously proving them wrong, creating a connection that goes beyond hockey and speaks to the broader experience of young professionals today. #NHL #GenZAthletes #BreakingStereotypes #ProfessionalDevelopment #SportsBusiness

The recent National Hockey League (NHL) commercial about Gen Z hit the nail on the head. It’s time to rethink your perceptions. If you're adhering to outdated or false stereotypes about Gen Z, then you're probably either: 1. Missing out on the next generation of talent, or 2. Fostering a toxic work environment for the younger generation. Gen Z brings innovation, adaptability, and a fresh perspective. As leaders, it's our responsibility to break down misconceptions and create inclusive spaces where they can thrive. Embrace the change — it’s the key to future-proofing your team and business.

#snsinstitutions #snsdesignthinkers #designthinking **Hockey: A Thrilling Game of Speed and Skill** Hockey is one of the most exciting and fast-paced sports in the world. It is a game that demands incredible athleticism, precision, and teamwork. The sport is played in various forms, including ice hockey, field hockey, and roller hockey, with ice hockey being the most popular in North America, Europe, and parts of Asia. ### **Origins and Evolution** Hockey’s origins date back to ancient civilizations, where stick-and-ball games were played in many cultures. Modern ice hockey, however, was formalized in Canada during the late 19th century. The first official indoor hockey game was played in Montreal in 1875. Over time, hockey grew into a global sport, with international tournaments like the Olympics and the World Championships gaining prominence. ### **Ice Hockey** Ice hockey is played on a rectangular rink with a frozen surface, six players per team, and a puck. The goal is to score by shooting the puck into the opponent's net while preventing them from doing the same. The game is known for its speed and physicality

A post mainly aimed at my hockey contacts….. Just returned from Belgium, an outdoor preseason trip with Lisa Letchford OLY for our 1st XI boys at Framlingham College who start their outdoor hockey term in early January. In Belgium, the clubs are just entering the second month of their indoor season where outdoor hockey closes down from November to February. (The benefits from playing indoor to support outdoor technical development are numerous.) Many European countries have the infrastructure with handball courts providing ready made indoor hockey pitches. (It’s how indoor hockey began in Germany in the 1950s!) In Belgium, they have created their own indoor hockey infrastructure, erecting marquees and laying floors at their clubs. Normally on astroturf or tennis courts. The facilities are used round the clock, from U9s to International squads. There are 20 - 25 clubs who have these facilities. Whilst there are challenges to providing these types of facilities, I do think we are missing a trick in the UK. If you are a hockey fan, particularly of indoor, please have a read. Is there the will for this to happen in the UK? https://lnkd.in/e7bKXzRT
