An Old English tradition that reminds us to pack up things we no longer use. It's a time to donate to others what may not be wanted, lightly used and still full of life, or something that can help others in need. Boxing Day is a reminder to me to de-clutter, prioritize, organize, and importantly, ✨LET GO✨ of things that no longer serve me and embrace new perspectives, strategies, and tools to guide me into the new year. Do you know some of the traditions around Boxing Day? What are some of the things you do to recognize this day? Boxing Day, celebrated on December 26, is a holiday with historical roots in giving back and showing gratitude. It originated in the United Kingdom and is observed in many Commonwealth nations, including Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Here's a breakdown of its history: Origins Medieval Traditions In medieval England, Boxing Day was the day when servants and tradespeople received “Christmas boxes” from their employers. These boxes often contained money, gifts, or leftover food from Christmas feasts as a token of appreciation for their service throughout the year. Church Influence The day is tied to the Christian tradition of St. Stephen’s Feast Day, which also falls on December 26. Churches often opened their alms boxes, which collected donations for the needy, and distributed the contents. Evolution Victorian Era The holiday became more formalized in the Victorian period, as employers began granting their staff the day off to visit family after working on Christmas Day. Wealthier families prepared boxes of food, money, or clothing to give to those less fortunate. Sporting Traditions Boxing Day also became associated with leisure and sports. It’s a big day for football (soccer) matches in the UK and other sporting events, continuing to this day. Modern Celebrations Shopping Frenzy In recent years, Boxing Day has become synonymous with major sales and shopping events, similar to Black Friday in the U.S. Retailers offer deep discounts, and stores are often crowded with bargain hunters. Charity and Community Despite its commercialization, many people and organizations still honor the holiday’s original spirit by volunteering or donating to charity. Fun Fact About the Name The term "Boxing Day" is thought to come from: Christmas Boxes given to workers or the poor. The alms boxes in churches. The practice of wealthy families giving boxes of gifts to staff or tradespeople.
