We asked ourselves what it would feel like to discover an original Porsche Design Chronograph 1 tucked away in a drawer for the last half-century and what it would take to make that watch fit for the present. The result is the 2024 Porsche Design Chronograph 1 Limited Edition For Hodinkee. A watch rooted in the specifications of F. A. Porsche but with details designed for the modern watch - and car - enthusiast. True to the original, the watch and bracelet are finished in a matte black but with an upgraded Titanium-carbide coating. We've swapped the traditional tachymeter with a legacy-spec "1 Mile" rehaut for the US market and added a Japanese day wheel as an homage to our friends in Japan. To round it out, we made sure to include the old-school Porsche Design logo and font and threw in a small H at 6 o'clock in Porsche's iconic red hue. This watch is everything we love about the original Chronograph 1 and then some. The 2024 Porsche Design Chronograph 1 Limited Edition For Hodinkee is available now in the @hodinkeeshop. https://lnkd.in/gZRe7ETF

I was walking around Amsterdam when I saw it. A Porsche 911—decades old, yet still turning heads. It didn’t feel outdated. It felt iconic. What makes Porsche’s design timeless? It’s the balance of evolution and consistency: • A silhouette you’d recognize anywhere. • Proportions that feel perfect, even today. • Subtle updates that adapt without losing identity. Timeless design has 3 traits: 1. Clarity: Every line has a purpose. 2. Connection: It makes you feel something. 3. Consistency: It evolves, but never forgets its roots. It doesn’t demand attention. It earns it—year after year. What’s one product you think embodies timeless design?

Mixed Feelings on Ferrari’s Design Choices for the F80 Sometimes I just don’t understand Ferrari’s design decisions. Take the F80 for example—it’s a $3.5 million hypercar, but the design feels inconsistent. The top view is stunning, and while the rear view is not bad, it doesn't feel special enough for a car of this caliber. But the front view? Honestly, no matter how you look at it, it’s just downright unattractive. What baffles me even more is the choice of materials. At this price point, I expect nothing less than perfection, and Ferrari could have at least gone with carbon fiber for the front fascia. Instead, we get glossy black plastic that you can find in a $35,000 Camaro. Really? Does this design choice make sense for a car with such a pedigree and price tag?

I'm experimenting with redesigning the FIAT logo, shifting it from an emblem to a letterform style. FIAT, an Italian car company founded in 1899, has had various logo designs throughout its history. Earlier logos were more detailed and traditional, while newer versions became simpler and modern. This redesign is about finding a fresh look that respects FIAT's heritage while giving it a modern twist. #fiat #logo #branding #conceptdesign

🚨 Jaguar Just Changed Its Logo—And People Are Losing Their Minds! 🚨 Why? Because we love what we know. It's an intriguing and thought-provoking image to imagine a supercar, a masterpiece of engineering and design, being hung on the ceiling as a chandelier. The designer, who meticulously crafted the car with a focus on performance, aerodynamics, and every detail that makes it a high-performance machine, would likely feel a sense of disappointment or frustration. Their vision would have been about power, speed, and the thrill of the road—not being reduced to a static, decorative object. The car is meant to roar down highways, showcasing its finely-tuned engine, aerodynamic features, and precision design. It's built to create an exhilarating driving experience, evoking emotions and adrenaline in those who are lucky enough to get behind the wheel. Seeing it hanging above as an ornamental piece might feel like its potential is being wasted, its purpose lost in the process of being turned into mere decor. The emotional connection that car enthusiasts and designers share with vehicles is deep. For the designer, their work is more than just a car; it's a culmination of years of innovation, passion, and expertise. To see it hanging in an unfunctional, ornamental way would not only be a disservice to the car's purpose but also to the designer's vision and pride in the work they've created. It’s as if the car is stripped of its identity and turned into something that’s more about aesthetic than the dynamic experience it was meant to offer. That said, it could also be seen as a form of art—an unconventional celebration of design. But if viewed through the lens of the designer's original intent, it might indeed feel like a mismatch, a tragic irony of what the car was made for versus its fate as a ceiling fixture. https://lnkd.in/gRA8w2iB

I can’t help but think to myself. Was this to satisfy current Jaguar-lovin’ consumers (or marketers who obvs had their fair bash at this).. or is the brand getting itself ready for the upcoming wave of GenZ and Alphas who may acknowledge the rebrand as completely fresh and theoretically speaking, their prospective buyers (just.. maybe not at this time, yet.). I’d love to see how this pans out in 7-10 years. Gen Zs would then potentially have that purchasing power and Alphas, well.. What did you think of the rebrand? Would love to hear your thoughts on this. 👍 or 👎? #Jaguar #Branding #Rebranding

When your brand name is Jaguar - using the cat as the visual hammer is a no brainer. And when you were using it for decades and the new agency kills the cat - it is a crime. The company says the reinvention is grounded in the philosophy of its founder, Sir William Lyons, who famously declared, “A Jaguar should be a copy of nothing.” Nobody said to copy anything, just keep what you had going for you. The Jaguar leaper was a classic visual hammer and one of the last things going for the brand - U.S. sales in 2023 were 8,348 cars. Jaguar calls the updated design and graphics a complete reset to communicate Jaguar’s transformation, both stylistically and in terms of its ambition to reclaim its place in the luxury market. More like a throwing the baby out with the bathwater. #positioning #visualhammer #jaguar
