I do think it is a frigate because of its size and the scope of its general capabilities. If ships designations were to be governed by political acceptance or wishfulness most ships would be patrol boats or APV:s. The Sw RN is better served by a correct ship type designation than by a politically correct one. Our Navy needs the self esteem that this new ship may bring about after its experience of diminutives in ship sizes as well as numbers.
Is it a #frigate or a #corvette? The Swedish Armed Forces won't say, but the Next Generation Surface Ship (NGSS) Luleå-class vessel programme will expand Swedish Navy strategic horizons as it conducts more operations as a NATO member in the #Baltic approaches, Atlantic and Mediterranean as well as in the Baltic Sea. With these ships the Swedish Navy is at the beginning of a transition from a sea denial force into a sea control force. https://lnkd.in/gE8CKM2a Shephard Media Saab Kockums Thanks to Lars Wedin from the Swedish Institute for Security and Defence.

How strong is China’s navy? July 26 2024 China’s rapid naval buildup has allowed it to pull ahead of the U.S. Navy by the straightforward metric of number of battle force ships, and it continues to build at a rapid rate. The United States retains a large lead over the People’s Liberation Army navy by tonnage and a qualitative edge in several types of platforms – though the difference in quality is shrinking. The United States also works closely with other regional navies, though whether that will matter in crisis is open to debate. On July 26, Brookings will host a discussion designed to assess the relative strengths of the world’s two most powerful navies. Reaching a clear but nuanced assessment of China’s naval strength is essential for U.S. strategy in Asia. Moving beyond the “quality versus quantity” debate, the discussion will focus on areas of relative strength and comparative assessment.
