What does #unconsciousbias look like for #womenintech? Take a deep dive with our speaking panel of women consisting of Gloriann Sahay, Cher Fox (The Datanista), CDMP, Shanice Gaskell, Laura Holt and Vanessa V. as they explore the topic of unconscious bias in the tech industry. Unconscious biases (or as Cher puts it, assumed biases), are ideas that come from conditioning or stereotypes about women in general. This is what I see when I attend a tech conference: ~20% of women representation  And the number gets even lower when the sessions are more technical. So next time you want to ask: Why did I join Women Techmakers? Why do I host in person Coffee chats for women in AI? This picture shows a little bit of that WHY. I want to see more women in this space. I want to see more diversity. And if what I do can help at least one woman feel more confident, I'll call it a win.

At Richmond Technology Council - rvatech/ women in technology conference today and someone asked such a provocative question of the Deep Tech Panel: “What advice would you give when you find yourself always the only woman at the table?” The room took a collective deep breath…and thanks to the panelists (Kelley Williamson, Karen D. Sorber, Somiah (So-May-uh) Lattimore, CSPO, and Aesha Mehta) for sharing some great, candid nuggets of wisdom.   -Just own what you want to say and if you’re hesitant to say it…use questions.  -Ask the question why? Why are there no women or women of color in this room? -Find the men that support you. Leverage the help of those willing to support you and make space for your voice.  -Make sure it’s a room you want to be in. If it is, then make a seat at the table for the next woman. #inclusiveteaming #womenintech
