The power of small museums. “Can Supporting Small Museums Solve Larger Problems in the Museum Field? I believe they can.” So writes Alli Schell for the blog Museums and Race. With more investment, Schell argues, very small museums would have the power to transform the museum landscape by advancing racial equity, breaking down hierarchies that drive the museum field, improving working conditions and benefits for museum workers, and changing the world of grant funding for the better. I’m thrilled to continue and deepen the conversation around #contemplation and #mindfulness in #museums in this co-edited guest issue! Just two years ago Viewfinder, the NAEA Museum Education Division’s online publication explored this topic in a special issue within the scope of art education and social justice (Murphy, 2022). This issue aims to explore novel avenues to better comprehend the potentials of a variety of critical, contemplative encounters within museums and galleries of various disciplines. We invite articles that include examples of theory, people, programs, and events that examine the questions below ~ ✨What practices have been left out of contemplative pedagogy and practice in museums? In addition to mindfulness, what other contemplative practices could inform the way we teach? ✨What innovative approaches characterize new forms of contemplative practices in museums? Particularly, what are approaches that center a critical and anti-oppressive lens. ✨How can we, as educators, consider contemplative practices that challenge appropriation within museums – for example, museums that offer yoga as a form of programming? ✨How does contemplative practice challenge educators to ask questions on how these programs affirm white supremacy in predominantly white public spaces? And if you’d like to chat or have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me or my amazing colleague Beatriz Asfora Galuban, Ph.D.! #contemplativepractice #mindfulnesspractice #mindfulmuseum #mindfuleducation #contemplativeeducation
The Journal of Museum Education is also seeking proposals for an upcoming issue on rethinking contemplative learning and experiences in museum education, led by guest editors Jenna S. Green and Beatriz Galuban. Practitioners and scholars thinking about contemplation and its potential relationships to anti-oppression, intersectionality, critical thinking, and appropriation in museum spaces are highly encouraged to submit! All submissions are due by November 8, 2024. To learn more, check out the full call for papers: https://lnkd.in/g2CdhV3y #museumeducation #museumlearning #contemplation #callforarticles

The Spring 2024 issue of Exhibition journal is now out. “Alternative Realities” surveys many ways exhibitions can question existing systems and open pathways to new and more equitable futures. At a time when what divides us can feel almost insurmountable, authors share how they are harnessing hope, challenging prevailing narratives, and upending established museum practices as they seek to reshape our vision of what is possible—within and beyond the museum. Exhibition is a journal of exhibition theory and practice for museum professionals published by the American Alliance of Museums. Museums often take a one-way approach to education: professionals teach, and the public learns. But what if we flipped this script? Jose Antonio Gordillo Martorell, Founder and CEO of Cultural Inquiry, urges us to give youth a voice in our museums by setting up a Children’s Board, where kids can become co-creators and decision-makers. https://lnkd.in/eP5tyRH9 #museum #museums #museumnext

“Accessing the Museum.” The call for papers for the Fall 2025 issue of Exhibition—the journal of exhibition theory and practice for museum professionals published by the American Alliance of Museums—is now open. For this issue, we reflect on 35 years since the American Disabilities Act was signed into law and seek articles that examine the many facets of accessible exhibition-making such as: the pervasiveness of ableism within museums and how to dismantle it, evolving standards for universal and/or inclusive design, the role of language or multisensory interpretive strategies in creating accessible environments, and more. Proposals are due January 6. Read about the theme “Accessing the Museum” and how to submit a proposal at: https://lnkd.in/e6EMbkQ9 #museums #exhibitions #exhibitiondesign #accessibility

Towards adopting more environmentally sustainable practices.
Welcome to the slow museum, where less is more. To deepen programming and community engagement, some institutions are choosing to stage fewer exhibitions, focusing on quality and meaningful experiences https://ow.ly/JmvT50Soegf

Employee friendly, collaborative effort, environmentally sustainable, appropriately aligned to tourist seasons, immersive local community engagement - the slow-museum model seems to have it all; but not without its challenges! With concerns of waitlisting in terms of booking exhibitions or artwork donations, artists' resentments, job cuts etc., I really like how the article highlights that the model still paves way for in-depth conversations and consciousness art consumption. As a fan of slow living and relishing art, slowly and meaningfully, a yay from me!
