What made German products and services legendary? Reliability and top-notch quality! But are we still living up to it, or is our edge becoming a little... dull? 🤔 ➡️ Reliability German products were practically synonymous with dependability. Meeting deadlines and keeping promises? That was our jam. But nowadays, has “I’ll get to it... eventually” become the new normal? ➡️Commitment to Quality “Made in Germany” was like a worldwide seal of approval. We were the perfectionists! But are we still there, or has “close enough” snuck into the conversation? ➡️Care and Precision Back in the day, our planning was so meticulous you’d think it was engineered by a perfectionist robot. Now, do we still sweat the details, or are we just hoping things fall into place? These values have been the backbone of our economy and therefore the success of German companies. What do you think – is Germany still the gold standard, or are we slipping into ‘good enough’ territory?

It's time to accelerate. Last week, I was in Paris and Munich, spending time with customers and The Alliance (Adam Keating CoLab Software, Bradley Rothenberg nTop, David Heiny SimScale). Our discussions with The Alliance made one thing strikingly clear: the pressure on our automotive industry customers from Chinese competition is unprecedented. Cost reduction targets are in the range of billions. Time-to-market must be reduced by up to 50%. And often, this has to be achieved with a reduced headcount. When? By 2025. Meeting these cost reduction targets while simultaneously increasing product development velocity is a formidable challenge. Clearly, it’s driving a significant mindset shift across the industry. We’re hearing fewer statements like, “We’ve always done it this way.” Instead, there’s an openness to new solutions. Timelines are compressed, decisions are faster, and everyone understands that the game has changed. The world has changed, and we all need to adapt. I’m optimistic. I see this as an opportunity for Europe to wake up and accelerate. The Alliance is bullish on the future. Let’s go!

On this episode of China Field Notes, Scott Kennedy speaks with Michael Laske, a sage veteran auto industry consultant in China. In this in-depth conversation, he explains how over the last three decades China’s domestic auto firms went from being students in joint ventures to achieving global leadership in electric vehicles and batteries. He analyzes why Chinese industrial policy has been more effective in this sector than in others as well as the important value to the West of having their firms in China and Chinese firms in the Western markets.

Until 2020, Germany's car exports to China were still growing. Those days are long gone. To exit the middle-income trap, China's leadership supports New Productive Forces aimed at raising manufacturing levels of advanced technology to surpass Germany. Perhaps it should not be surprising that the NDRC, a macroeconomic management agency within China, is serious about policy support for the flying car sector. The agency plans to establish an entire department dedicated to the “low-altitude economy.” That’s according to Chen Zhijie, director of the State Key Laboratory of Air Traffic Management Systems, who spoke at the Greater Bay Area Science Forum—a 9-city megalopolis (not California). According to Trivium, a China policy research company, Beijing is approaching the low-altitude economy the same way it approached EV development: 1. Get regulators to move quickly to establish the rules of the road 2. Fund and roll out requisite infrastructure 3. Subsidize the companies producing the technology, even if the market isn’t quite ready for it Photo credit: CFOTO / Imago
