The cost of single family homes can be seen across Southern California as more and more land are developed without the necessary infrastructure. The city and county have to deal with the unpopular idea that single family homes can no longer be a majority of housing available. More and more neighborhoods must be consolidated into higher density. The recent SCAG presentation on demographics already shows the shifting patterns of people who are now migrating eastward because of the lack of high density housing for families. When K-12 campuses are being repurposed into single family home tracts, it is not a recipe for sustaining neighborhoods.
Los Angeles has to rezone the entire city. Why are officials protecting single-family-home neighborhoods?

Today, Boston Indicators is pleased to release our latest report focusing on homelessness trends, demographics, and how these all relate to our housing crisis. https://lnkd.in/ejxNmqSh Register for the author briefing: https://lnkd.in/eaUr3BdH. Most notably, we find that: Among comparable U.S. cities and Continuums of Care, Boston has the second highest homelessness rate overall but also the eighth lowest rate of unsheltered homelessness. In Greater Boston, most are in family units, and many of them are recent immigrants. But perhaps one of the biggest reasons the region has this high homelessness rate is that we are not producing enough housing, and the housing we do have is simply too expensive. Check out the full report for more on trends in #homelessness, the demographics of our unhoused population, and how #housing contributes to our high homelessness rate. #greaterboston #boston #continuumsofcare #unhoused

Interesting takeaway on home ownership and under-35s from the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies analysis of the latest American Community Survey data: "Homeownership rates for younger adults declined for the first time in several years, likely related to rising home values and reduced homebuyer affordability. Homeownership rates among households under age 35 decreased 0.5 percentage points in 2022-2023 to 36.1 percent. This was the first meaningful decline for this age group in nearly a decade. Rates for households aged 35-44 also declined by a modest 0.1 percentage point to 61.1 percent. But continued high rates among the growing number of older households kept the national homeownership rate steady at 65.2 percent in 2023, on par with the rates of the last two years." Without increased home production and a diversity of options to meet the demands of a wide array of households at different stages of life, we'll continue to see fewer young households owning homes, a shift that will have ripple effects across communities and regions. #housing #development #homeownership https://lnkd.in/e2fPGC4x
