🎭 Community theatre can be used as a tool for fighting oppression. On #WorldTheatreDay, we examine how this discipline empowers activism. Unlike classical theatre, where certain people are allowed to act while others can only watch, the so-called Theatre of the Oppressed -a form of forum theatre- doesn’t tend to involve professional actors. Instead, it brings together groups of ordinary people who have experienced oppression to better understand their situations. They develop a whole play on a conflict and perform it in front of an audience. Once the performance is over, the audience jumps in to offer solutions. They can then go on stage to replay the situation, integrating their suggestions to see if they work. "What is special about forum theatre – in fact, about community theatre in general – is that it allows people to experience what it means to be involved in conflict, to be conscious of the situation, to think about it, and to be active. It empowers activism," explains Hungarian theatre director Tasnádi-Sáhy. The approach was developed by Augusto Boal, a Brazilian Marxist playwright who wanted to make theatre for people and by people. He believed that everyone is an actor. "Acting is about being human; theatre is the art of being human. Everyone should have the right to be a conscious actor in society, with control over their actions." Did You Know – Top Ten Reasons a Dealer is not a Theatre Consultant - By Paul Sanow Sometimes there is confusion in the marketplace about the roles of theatre consultants and dealers. Some owners or architects elect to work with a dealer, thinking they will receive the same level of service as they would from a dedicated theatre consultant, and possibly for free. Theatre consultants and dealers may each be considered “theatre experts”, but they have very different roles and agendas in the construction process. READ THE ARTICLE: https://lnkd.in/gV7y3AdX
