With just two days to go to the ACGC Conference 2024, our very own Nankunda Katangaza explains the motivation behind setting-up Africa's largest in-house legal community in partnership with Lareine Gold Consulting (LGCAfrica). "ACGC came about as part of our shared commitment to supporting the professional needs of Africa’s in-house legal community by providing a network, information, resources, training, and other services that support their roles in business and government across the continent. For Hook Tangaza, this is in keeping with our mission of serving as a catalyst for positive change across the legal sector globally." #LegalCommunity #ACGC4B #InHouseLawyers #Networking

Doing Business in South Africa is certainly not easy, and it would be interesting to see how we compare with other countries. Since the inception of the Foreigner Assurance process at CIPC - Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (a member of the dtic Group), it has become impossible to make Director changes—it went from 1 hour to 3 hours, and now it is taking longer than 2 weeks. More often than not documents are rejected for absurd reasons (reminds me of the time when the old CM29's were rejected to meet the CIPC @quota's). CIPC - Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (a member of the dtic Group) needs to improve their turnaround times if South Africa is to be considered a place to invest and compete internationally.

The inefficiencies that are being experienced with CIPC has been a frustrating process. There are various issues that are arising on a daily basis which is leading to extremely poor service delivery and more often than not, the reasoning behind the inefficiencies make no sense. Additionally, addressing operational shortcomings is crucial for maintaining and achieving long-term sustainability. Moreover, when trying to get any form of feedback in relation to something, you are passed from pillar to post and once you get through to someone it often feels as though the person is inexperienced.

2moA huge thanks to Nankunda Katangaza and Cynthia Lareine for transforming the General Counsel landscape in Africa through ACGC (African Corporate and Government Counsel Forum). They’ve created a platform that breaks down barriers and aggregates valuable knowledge for GCs across the continent. As an external counsel in the TMT space, I’ve had the privilege of engaging with ACGC through their annual conference and publications. It’s been eye-opening to witness the collaborative spirit fostered between in-house and external counsel. Thank you, Nankunda Katangaza and Cynthia Lareine, for creating such an impactful community for legal professionals!
