In my 20s, I wanted a board role to symbolise success, believing that getting one would mean I had 'made it'.   But looking back, it was ambition for all the wrong reasons.    Now in my 30s, my perspective has shifted.   I've taken on two board roles and am learning to leverage my skills to gain a deeper understanding of governance and ultimately make a difference, realigning my values and ambitions for all the right reasons.   On reflection, these are the three lessons that have helped me get board roles that align with my values, skills and ambitions:   1. Define your purpose.     Why do I want to join the board?       How does my motivation align with the organisation's mission?  2. Highlight your value.    What skills do I bring to the table?       How can I contribute to delivering strategic outcomes?     3. Set clear goals.     What impact do I want to have?       What do I want to learn from the experience?      Asking myself these questions has helped me clarify my intentions and look for opportunities with real meaning.
