This is tantamount to squashing a fly with a sledgehammer. First off, he didn’t waste the time of the court by pleading guilty. 2)He is a first time offender 3) It was a non violent crime. We keep playing lip service to the need to decongest our correctional facilities but hopefully one day we will take it seriously. I understand the provisions of the law but I also believe that he should have been given a non custodial sentence. In my humble opinion, Bobrisky is not being punished for mutilating the Naira.

Ignorance of the law is definitely not an excuse. However, the exercise of discretion in the sentencing process should, where necessary, take into consideration mitigating factors. The maximum term of imprisonment was imposed with no option of fine. Attempting to answer the question whether or not same was just will only amount to an academic exercise, at this point.

Who doesn't know that abusing the naira is an offence? But then, if he had a good Lawyer, maybe it would have been a different case! Finally, I think the Judge was probably disgusted 🤢
