I have an amazing team of social workers. Last week one of the schools they run our substance use treatment program in, all 10 learners tested positive on entering the program and ALL 10 tested negative on completion.

It's brilliant to see your team focusing on compassion fatigue, an issue crucial in foster care where caring for trauma-affected children, though rewarding, demands immense emotional energy. The brain, incredibly adaptive, faces significant stress during prolonged caregiving. It releases oxytocin to enhance bonding but also triggers stress responses like cortisol release, potentially causing emotional and physical fatigue. Understanding these neurological effects is vital. Without proper support, foster carers risk allostatic load—chronic stress's wear and tear affecting health and emotional reserves necessary for effective fostering. Implementing stress management strategies, accessing support systems like social workers and peer groups, and ensuring time for emotional and physical rejuvenation can alleviate compassion fatigue symptoms. Knowing Alison and Angela, I'm know your commitment to carer wellbeing is a priority, so clearly evidenced by the extensive resources on your website: https://lnkd.in/dUhRwvEZ If I were considering fostering, your team would be my first choice! ⭐ 😍
Today our foster carers and social workers are spending the morning thinking about compassion fatigue with AC Education . Such an important issue to think about how caring for someone living with trauma can impact on the carer. As a service we know our families are the ones at such risk. We have a duty to provide information and services to reduce risks of compassion fatigue.

At Day 2 of #VACMinisterial, we are discussing the effects of violence on children. 🚸 📚 Violence in and around schools can severely affect children's development, creating lifelong effects. 1 in 6 children & young people contacted yourtown's #KidsHelpline service in 2023 regarding family relationship issues. Let's work towards creating a culture where those impacted by Domestic & Family Violence are believed & supported. Respectful relationships start early, & we are committed to being there for children & young people across Australia for support & counselling, anytime any reason. Comments like "why didn't you just leave" or "they seemed like such a nice person" only enable unacceptable behaviour. Such comments also make it harder for those who are impacted to seek help, as they may blame themselves or feel ashamed. Thanks to the support of Bupa, our Kids Helpline @ School program can start respectful relationships conversations early in Primary School. Here’s a useful link for parents about how to start those respectful relationship conversations: https://lnkd.in/gpFK5d89 Let's join hands and make Australia a safer place for everyone. #EndDomesticViolence #RespectfulRelationships #KidsMatter #yourtownAU

Yesterday's #KingsSpeech has given hope to children and young people. 1/ It is promising to see that those who coerce or force young people into criminal activity will face punishment under the Government's new law. For too long, professionals have been working with outdated laws that result in children and young people unnecessarily suffering. 2/ The Government's commitment to prioritising young people's mental health is a great start in tackling the painful reality that 311,000 young people who experience violence suffer from PTSD without accessible aftercare. 3/ We welcome the Children's Wellbeing Bill which "will put children and their wellbeing at the centre of the education and children's social care systems." This bill will strengthen multi-agency child protection and safeguarding arrangements for at-risk children and young people. Our experience tells us that genuine partnership creates more impactful change for young people. However, these changes require investment. We urge the Government to take action in their autumn spending review. One thing is certain, we will keep supporting young people to live safe lives. No young person should live with the threat of violence and exploitation ✊🏾 ✊🏿✊ #YouthWork #YoungPeople #SaferLondon #YouthViolence #CCE

✨ Feedback highlights from this week's training! This week’s delegates included a fantastic group of social workers, who are in a prime position to make a real difference for individuals experiencing homelessness. Alongside hospital discharge teams, social workers are as well placed as anyone to achieve quick, effective outcomes using the fundamentals of the law that we cover in our Introductory course. Plus, they help save significant amounts from the public purse! The next session with available spots is January 24th. Check the Eventbrite link in the comments for more details. #SocialWorkers #Training #CommunityImpact #Gatekeepingisalifestylechoice #Nothousingpeopleisalifestylechoice

When it comes to supporting young people to heal, there are no silver bullets. The idea that any intervention or program can "fix" a young person is flawed and unhelpful. Healing takes time, and for rangatahi in the justice system, they are often there as a result of experiencing significant harm. If we are going to support young people to heal, that requires patience. Our systems, programs and professionals must be built with the understanding that in a young persons healing journey there will be times where they make mistakes. Relapse is a natural and necessary part of the healing journey. I often say to Youth Worker's I've mentored, 'That Incidents Are Oppurtunities'. That is, when things go wrong, that there are the greatest oppurtunities for love, healing, learning and growth. 'If' we have the patience, empathy and love needed to hold young people through these times. Change and transformation is possible, but healing is not enabled through punishment. Only love transforms. #LoveIsTheWay #YouthWork #YouthDevelopment #YouthJustice #YouthCrime #nzpol https://lnkd.in/gpesXM4t
