A new generation of blood tests promises to change the way doctors diagnose and treat Alzheimer’s disease. The tests offer a fast and easy way for physicians to learn whether a patient with symptoms of cognitive decline also has the brain changes associated with Alzheimer’s. Evidence of those brain changes is required before doctors can prescribe one of two recently approved drugs that can slow down the disease. New in the main journal, Rahimi et al explore neuroimaging changes in patients with mild Wilson disease. Imaging changes can be seen before neuropsychiatric symptoms; myelin or white matter in general seems vulnerable to low-level copper toxicity, with white matter volume loss showing promise as a marker for assessing brain involvement in early WD stages. 🤔💭 “Thinking back at the years before your MS symptoms began, can you, in hindsight, tell me anything that might have predated them?” When Helen Tremlett, Professor of Neurology at The University of British Columbia posed this question during an MS Society meeting, the room fell silent. Then, one by one, people began to share their stories. 🏥 💊 MS might begin years before the clinical onset. In the five years before MS symptoms become apparent, many people start visiting doctors more often and rely on prescription medications more frequently. This suggests the existence of an MS prodrome. 👨🏼⚕️ Prof. Giancarlo Comi from Ospedale San Raffaele in Italy adds: “MS prodrome represents a subtle way in which the disease emerges, often with non-specific symptoms that go unrecognised.” Understanding MS prodrome could be key to improving early diagnosis and treatment, or even to stop the condition. 💫 Read more about non-specific symptoms of MS prodrome in our latest Insights: https://bit.ly/3WRKfh5 #MS #Prodrome #Diagnostics #MSResearch

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) can vastly improve the quality of life for patients with movement disorders like Parkinson’s disease, but is currently underutilised. Hear from Francesca Morgante, consultant neurologist, professor of Neurology, and the Eleanor Peel Chair for the study of Aging at St George’s University of London, and Vincent Sourdaine, Vice President of Neuromodulation, EMEA, at Boston Scientific, about the status of Parkinson’s Disease and its treatments. By examining the full procedure and how it can be optimised to accelerate planning and programming, time can be freed for both physician and patient. https://lnkd.in/dMAR3-5H #BSCEMEA
