Spider lily - Fill your garden with fragrant flowers throughout the year - Hymenocallis littoralis Spider lily plants are one of the easiest, fuss-free plants you can grow in your garden in pots, or on the ground. They grow to a height of 50-60 cm with long, flat, strap-like, dark green leaves. Spider lilies have the most unique-looking flowers; a thin membrane cup in the middle surrounded by long white petals, also with long filaments and anther. Spider lily plants bloom almost throughout the year with tall stalks having large bunches of beautiful white flowers standing tall, high above the broad, strappy leaves. Leaves are dark green, about 60-80 cm long and 10-15 cm wide with a prominent mid-vein. Young leaves stay upright, whereas older leaves bend and fall over the edges of pots making these plants look very beautiful indeed. Blooming needs good direct sunlight, though the plant can look good even without the blooms. The inflorescence usually consists of 8-10 flowers on long stalks, and range in color from yellow, green, and white. There are over 60 species of these bulbous lilies. #spiderlily #spider lily #hymenocallis

Originally introduced from China in 1980, the seven-son flower (𝘏𝘦𝘱𝘵𝘢𝘤𝘰𝘥𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘮𝘪𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘴) has become popular in the Northeast. These shrubs have fragrant blooms that arrive in August and September. The small, star-shaped flowers are produced in seven whorls, which lends to the shrub’s common name. In autumn, after the flowers fade, red-purple fruits appear. Find them in the Lawn and Winter Gardens. ARBOR DAY UK "Rewards" I now have a lot of plantings to go back to, after five years of plantings associated with our Arbor Days, here in Lancashire. Hard work, often bitten by horse flies, but going back to do the maintenance and looking after the trees is a MUST! 🌳 💚 I had an enjoyable Friday, lightly pruning and removing tree guards from a line of 24 oaks that I planted in 2010: they are doing fine. However, a much later planting for HM Queen Elizabeth II, in an area now called "Queen's Corner", was just as rewarding, if not more so. In the mix of that planting, I put in c. 30 Japanese snowbell trees (Styrax japonicus) that I had grown from seed. After three years, one was c. 2 metres tall, and flowering. Few trees in the UK flower in mid-summer: often, the best you can get is a mock orange (Philadelphus) - which is essentially a shrub (and the more modern cultivars available are nearly all dwarves - sad - a common trend in woody plant provision from garden centres these days). So, the Styrax is a very welcome summer flowerer - and so elegantly pretty with it! Seeing a tree I have reared from seed now flowering is a great reward - but I'm looking forward even more to next year, when all those Styrax are bigger, and five/six are flowering. Eventually, it will make a worthy display for "Queen's Corner" and whom this planting commemorates. With best wishes, Duncan. #ArborDayUK #trees #moretreesplease #Styrax #treeplanting #woodlandcreation #resilience #fromasmallseed #environment
