The full electrification of transport is a wild vision - an uneconomic and unsustainable one. The charging infrastructure mentioned in the article is a current problem. The bigger, longer term one are the grids. They are unable to withstand a massive increase in electric cars. Just as a thought experiment: how long do you guess it takes to exchange 1km of cable in an urban/suburban area (physically and bureaucratically) - and how many of those will have to be exchanged? Meanwhile alternative fuels, carbon neutral, could use the existing infrastructure.

As a user of a fully electric car, I can attest that the problem with the public charging infrastructure is real. 🚗 To achieve the 55% CO2 reduction target for cars and vans by 2030, we must be installing around 22,000 public charging points weekly. We had only 150,000 installed during the whole year of 2023. 🚗 Charging infrastructure is unevenly distributed, with two-thirds of charging points concentrated in just three countries (Netherlands, France, Germany). 🚗 Current permitting processes for public charging are too slow, and most EU member states lack incentives for infrastructure development. But there is no other way to get more EVs on the road than build better infrastructure. So we must find the ways to accelerate the progress. "Current charging infrastructure in the EU is not only insufficient in scale but also in distribution. Many countries, particularly in central and eastern Europe, are drastically underserved, creating a two-tier system with wealthier, western European countries ahead of the pack. Indeed, almost two-thirds of EU charging points are concentrated in just three member states – the Netherlands, France, and Germany. This imbalance threatens the foundational EU principle of cohesion and risks creating disparities in how citizens can participate in and benefit from the green transition. A disproportionate concentration in urban and affluent areas can also lead to a significant imbalance in EV adoption rates across regions, exacerbating social and economic divides."

New York State has announced $28.5 million in funding to expand EV fast chargers across major downstate travel corridors, including the lower Hudson Valley, New York City, and Long Island. This initiative, part of the federal NEVI program, aims to improve access to reliable charging infrastructure and encourage the adoption of electric vehicles. The funding, administered by NYSERDA and NYSDOT, will prioritize sites that close gaps in the charging network, provide amenities, and meet federal accessibility and uptime requirements. The ambitious goal of transitioning to electric vehicles (EVs) in Metro Vancouver by 2050 is commendable, but the staggering need for thousands more charging stations worth billions highlights the complexity of the task ahead. The report underscores the critical importance of collaborative efforts among all levels of government and agencies to overcome barriers such as cost and access to charging infrastructure. While recent investments and targets set by the province are steps in the right direction, addressing challenges like retrofitting older buildings will require innovative solutions and sustained commitment. Building a robust charging network is not just about supporting EV adoption; it's about paving the way for a sustainable future in transportation and beyond.

In planning for EV charging, data is so important. Looking at how diesel trucks operate is a pretty good predictor of how electric trucks will operate. Most fleet operators have fine tuned their vehicle usage to maximize value. Figuring out how to deploy infrastructure, both charging and grid, to keep those travel patterns unaltered is critical to keeping the EV transition at full steam for trucks. Figuring out how to deploy managed charging and behind the meter assets to keep grid costs in check and enable fleets to avoid on peak charging is the next step, and one that RMI is eager to take on. As always, Geotab is a great partner to work with on solving these important problems.
