VESSEL REVIEW: Indonesian shipyard Cahaya Samudra recently delivered two new fast ferries in a series to Singapore operator Majestic Fast Ferry. The newbuilds will replace older vessels in the owner's fleet that have since been sold to owners in Asia, Europe, the South Pacific, and the Middle East. The Singapore-flagged ferries 'Unity of Majestic' and 'Ethos of Majestic' each have all-aluminium construction, a length of 42 metres (140 feet), a beam of 10 metres (30 feet), a draught of only 1.4 metres (4.6 feet), a crew of nine, and seating for up to 343 passengers on two decks. Each of the new ferries boasts a sleek design including updated aesthetics and more spacious seating. The operational efficiency has increased compared to earlier vessels in the Majestic Fast Ferry fleet via the inclusion of a revised hull form capable of increased deadweight, while operational sea condition limits and passenger numbers are also enhanced. The newbuilds are therefore regarded as upgraded variants of an earlier generation of ferries. Full article link in comments.

Cochin Shipyard to partner Deendayal Port Authority for a Rs 1,600 crore Capesize compliant ship repair facility at Vadinar. Cochin Shipyard Ltd and Deendayal Port Authority, both state- owned, will team up to build a ship repair facility capable of dry docking Capesize vessels at Vadinar in Gujarat with an investment of some Rs1,600 crores, multiple sources said. MUMBAI: Cochin Shipyard Ltd and Deendayal Port Authority, both state- owned, will team up to build a ship repair facility capable of dry docking Capesize vessels at Vadinar in Gujarat with an investment of some Rs1,600 crores. The project will help Cochin Shipyard further establish its credentials as the country's top ship repairer, adding to the facilities it runs at the flagship yard in Kochi, the newly opened international ship repair facility at Cochin Port as well as repair units at Mumbai Port, Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port and Port Blair. According to plans, Deendayal Port Authority, the state-owned entity which runs the port at Kandla in Gujarat, will construct the jetty at Vadinar, one of its satellite facilities, while Cochin Shipyard will pitch in with a floating dry dock, operate and maintain the ship repair yard. Deendayal Port Authority will get a fixed share of revenue from ship repairs apart from lease rentals from the project, a government official briefed on the plan said. "Vadinar already has environmental clearance for a dry dock and also has a deep draft. By default, a 15-18 metres draft is available without dredging at Vadinar. It is ideal for building a facility that can repair even Capesize vessels, attracting interest from Cochin Shipyard," the government official said. https://lnkd.in/gZavAXsc Image for representation purposes only.

The importance of preparing your Maintenance Period or Refit Project and budget! I am very surprised to still witness Superyachts entering shipyard for yearly maintenance works or major refits based on approximative quotes and excel spreadsheets so called “Wish list”. As Project Manager and Technical Manager, I am convinced that a successful refit is based on a meticulous preparation followed by methodical approach of the project developments and supervision. The Yard Specifications should be the main pillar of the project, based on evaluation of yacht’s conditions, risk assessment and professional tendering process. Budget could be the most important aspect of a refit or yearly "yard maintenance period", although in some cases Schedule or Quality could be considered as prevailing over the budget aspect of the project. All the above should be discussed, evaluated, and considered with the client prior to request any quote to yard and contractors. At MLC Yachting we ask the clients to let us perform a full Technical Inspection of the Yacht, followed by creation of Yard Specifications for each of our project. Client’s priorities should be identified before the tendering process and should be considered the pillars of the structure which will then shape the final layout of the project, providing clear targets to all personnel involved and a solid foundation for the project itself. Knowledge to understand needs, Communication to clarify the targets and Professionalism to monitor and develop the project. Do not underestimate the importance of the Yard Specification and assessment of the Yacht’s conditions prior to entering the shipyard or requesting a quote! #superyacht #superyachts #yachts #yachtmaintenance #yachtmanagement #yachtrefit #yachting #yachtingindustry #superyachtindustry

On this day in 1756: John Loudon McAdam was born. John Loudon McAdam was a Scottish civil engineer and road-builder. He invented a new process, "macadamisation", for building roads with a smooth hard surface, using controlled materials of mixed particle size and predetermined structure, that would be more durable and less muddy than soil-based tracks. Modern road construction still reflects McAdam's influence. Of subsequent improvements, the most significant was the introduction of tar (originally coal tar) to bind the road surface's stones together, "tarmac" (for Tar Macadam.)
