Many people may know about my time at TotalEnergies and SLB, and how often I recieved stellar reviews and accolades from my supervisor(s). What they don’t know, however, is that one of the key reasons for my success was having someone to guide me along the way. I had someone who told me what to do, say, and behave in a professional setting. These tips were instrumental to my journey but unfortunately, not everyone have access to that kind of support. Many people, especially when starting their careers, lack clear guidance and end up making avoidable mistakes. It's sad, but it happens. After 2,5 years as a management trainee, we're saying goodbye to Arthur De Wulf! Arthur not only impacted our clients with roles as Junior Project Manager at Dupont, Consulting Chief Financial Officer at Habbekrats VZW, and Campus Recruiter at Ormit Talent. He also boosted our company culture by launching new committees and learning activities for other trainees, such as group language classes. On this day in 2019, I made the decision to give up on my degree because I was not enjoying it, and I remember a colleague telling me that if I gave up on that college, it would be very difficult to find a job in the future. 🤦🏻♀️ Fast forward to last month, I finished my internship to become a Project Manager at Siemens —my first big girl job! 🥳 Here are the lessons that I want to carry with me into the future! 1. 👩🏻💻It’s OK Not to Have Any Experience This was my very first experience in the working world; no one expects you to know everything. You’re a trainee, not a senior. 👍🏻 2. 🙋🏻♀️Be Assertive and Confident This is the most important piece of advice: if you created something or learned about a process, you’re the most capable person to speak about it. Sometimes, it’s all about confidence—even very experienced people don’t know everything. 👀 3.🫡 Demand Respect Just because you’re a trainee doesn’t mean your voice doesn’t count. 🗣️ 4. ✅ Trust That You’re Doing Better Than You Think Don’t put too much pressure on yourself, and remember to stop and smell the roses.🌹 5. 📈 Start Learning New Skills Early in College I wish I had started learning Excel and improving my PowerPoint skills back in college. The public speaking courses I took were very useful. 👩🏻🎓 Don’t forget to be yourself. It doesn’t matter if you’re a shy or outgoing person; you have something valuable to offer. ✨ And, of course, make your own decisions. Imagine if I had followed the ‘advice’ from my colleague! 😉
