The subject of resilience has been the focus of my thoughts a couple of times this week. It began with a conversation during which I was encouraged to reflect upon what I felt proudest of at work this year. My answer centred on how I have been resilient in the face of varied challenges and setbacks, both within and beyond my classroom, using them as opportunities for learning and growth rather than insurmountable obstacles. Truth be told there have been plenty of them but I sincerely believe this to be the year in which I moved the furthest on my own leadership journey thus far. Secondly, I attended a brilliant conference yesterday on Creating Mental Wellbeing in Schools. Several more knowledgeable and experienced professionals than I am shared thoughts, tips and strategies on how we can support our young people amidst the growing levels of mental health difficulties and as they navigate life post pandemic when so much changed over night for them. Resilience came up several times, including the idea that it is akin to a muscle which we need to flex and actively work to help it become more effective.
