Hospitals are focusing on decarbonization to meet 2050 emissions reduction goals. However, healthcare facilities are unique in their operational needs, requiring continuous function even during catastrophic events. Electrification, while appealing for emissions reductions, often presents challenges such as increased grid demand, higher costs for larger electrical systems, and operational complexities. Designing for peak demand and resilience may require a balance between electrification and the use of fossil fuels, especially during extreme conditions, to avoid overburdening electrical infrastructure and hospital budgets. A more practical approach to decarbonizing hospitals involves right-sizing systems for day-to-day operations, using energy-efficient designs, and flattening electrical demand through technology like thermal energy storage. Anticipating potential complications and future-proofing with modular designs can help hospitals transition to nearly full electrification over time without overwhelming current systems. This strategy allows healthcare facilities to reduce emissions without excessive costs while ensuring they remain operational during emergencies, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable healthcare future.
